Jake's POV
What!?
I'm not a king!
The idea of ruling the cruel vampire world repulsed me. I had already found solace in my life with Chris, relishing the simplicity of human experiences—working a regular job, sharing a bed, eating meals face-to-face, and reveling in the intimate moments we shared. I had no desire to ascend to a throne that promised isolation and danger.
"I want to refuse that offer," I asserted, contemplating the myriad possibilities and sacrifices that might accompany such a position. I've seen how this position changes people, it changes them from being a great leader to a monster, a terrifying one. I've seen the rise and fall of these kings and I don't want that burden on my end.
"You are the only eligible vampire to be our ruler, Jake," Balthazar, the council's leader, emphasized, his voice resonating with a weighty authority.
"I know the consequences. Enemies will hunt me down—werewolves, witches, and others. They'll come after me," I said, feeling Chris's hands tighten their grip on my arms.
I could sense his fear, his concern for what I was about to face. Werewolves, our mortal adversaries, and witches seeking our immortality for their own desires were constant threats. Now, with my potential ascent to the throne revealed, the dangers would only intensify.
"We know, Jake. That's why we're here, not only to offer you the position but also to warn you. Now that they know you're the next king, they'll relentlessly hunt you down," Balthazar explained.
"I need time to think," I stated, my mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.
"Okay. If that's what you want. We'll give you a week to make your decision," Balthazar declared before gracefully departing, his minions following suit.
Chris' POV
The atmosphere after that tense meeting was palpable with uncertainty. I turned to Jake, ready to discuss the situation, but before I could utter a word, he shifted his position and began kissing me. Unbeknownst to me, I found myself responding fervently, as if this were our last kiss, an intimate moment steeped in bittersweet passion.
He abruptly pulled away, leaving me longing for more. "What is your decision?" I asked, my voice tinged with anxiety.
Silence hung in the air, and he walked away, leaving me stunned. I wanted to reach out, run after him, and express my fear of losing him. I craved his presence, his laughter, the warmth of his touch—everything.
"JAKE!" I called out, my voice breaking with emotion.
I sprinted towards him, enveloping him in a desperate hug. He stiffened momentarily, and then, as our tears mingled, he whispered, "I will never leave you."
