Chris' POV

I woke up to a room filled with black smoke, and my first instinct was to panic, fearing that a fire had broken out in the building. I bolted out of bed, my heart racing, only to discover that it was a false alarm.

The source of the smoke became clear when I entered the kitchen and found Jake attempting to cook pancakes. They were on the verge of becoming charred remains as a result of his lack of experience in the kitchen. I couldn't help but smile at the sight of him wearing an apron, trying to create a breakfast surprise.

"What are you trying to do? Burn the whole house?" I muttered, unable to hide my amusement.

"I'm just trying to surprise you by cooking you breakfast," Jake replied, still frowning at the burned pancakes.

I appreciated the gesture, even if it had nearly resulted in a culinary catastrophe. I decided to let him know.

"What are you staring at?" he asked, catching me gazing at him.

I chuckled and excused myself to freshen up in the bathroom.

Upon my return to the kitchen, I noticed Jake still standing there, seemingly unsure of what to do next.

"Thanks for the concern, but I can cook for myself," I muttered.

He remained silent, and I began to worry that perhaps he was disappointed with his failed attempt.

"But really, thanks for it," I continued, wanting to assure him that I appreciated the gesture. His smile in response was enough to put my concerns to rest.

"So, what do you want to eat?" I inquired.

"Do you have any meat?" he asked.

"Just bacon. Cooked or raw?" I responded.

"I'll try the cooked one, if you may," he said.

I retrieved some bacon strips from the fridge and crisply fried them. Jake sat patiently, watching as I cooked eggs and toasted some bread.

I set the table for both of us, and he took his seat with a sense of anticipation.

"Are you really going to eat this food?" I asked, placing a plate of the food I'd prepared in front of him.

"No, but I'll try to adapt it," he replied, his determination shining through.

We began to eat in silence, and I couldn't help but think about his words.

"I'll try to adapt it."

It was a simple statement, but it held great significance. Jake's effort to integrate into the human world, despite his nature as a vampire, was commendable. I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for him as I watched him try to embrace our way of life.Next Chapter: A New Beginning
