Everything seemed to be perfect. During the day I would look after the twins and Louis, while Edward and Diane worked. Jessie would finish work around 3pm and the kids and I would pick him up from the auto shop and he would help me with the kids. He was always doing things to make the twins laugh while Louis would pretend to be cool and not laugh out loud but I would always catch him breaking a smile.
Jessie would make a great father one day, I knew we were way to young yet and were enjoying our time together at the moment, but it was nice to imagine Jessie’s and I’s future together.
Ring ring.
“Handsome could you get that” I yelled out from the kitchen as I put the cooking tray into the warm oven.
“Hello Hays residence” I heard Jessie say as I washed my hands and headed towards him.
“Mum, whats wrong, why are you crying?” I heard Jessie ask. I started to walk quicker towards him as I saw Jessie’s face fall as he turned to me.
“What, what happened?” I quickly asked as I took in Jessie’s sad eyes.
“Its Gemma. She had an accident” Jessie said, almost a whisper, as I saw a tear fall down his face.
I quickly rang Diane and Edward to let them know what had happened with Gemma. She was driving home from Uni and a drunk driver had T-boned her car. She was currently in the intensive care unit. Diane and Edward had arrived at the house within an hour of my call and prepared for Jessie and I to fly home to be with our family. They had agreed to let me have as long as I needed and to update them with any news about Gemma.
Jessie and I quickly packed a bag in silence and then headed to the airport. The whole flight home, Jessie sat in silence and every now and then would grab my hand and squeeze it. I would squeeze it back and peck his cheek or lips. We arrived home early morning and headed straight to the hospital.
“Gemma Royce’s room please” Jessie said to the young girl behind the desk.
“Room 105 floor 2” she replied after she tapped away at her computer.
We quickly walked to the elevator and headed to Gemma’s room.
Finding the room we knocked on the door and then headed in when Jessie’s mum opened it.
Gemma was laying on the bed with an IV drip in her and bruise’s all over her face and a cast on her right arm. I let out a small whimper as I saw her lying so still in the bed. Jessie pulled me into his arms and onto his lap as he sat down in the chair next to Gemma’s bed. He placed a kiss on my head and started to draw circles on the inside of my wrist, knowing that seeing Gemma like this was very difficult for me. My grandma had only just passed away before we left for England and Jessie was with me in the hospital at the time. He knew I didn’t want to be there but was being strong for him and Gemma. I took in a deep breath as Gemma slowly opened her eyes.
“Hey Gem. How are you feeling?” Jessie asked as he continued to draw circles on my wrist, trying to keep me calm.
“Hey” Gemma said roughly. Mary (Jessie and Gemma’s mum) passed Gemma a plastic cup with water. She took a few sips as she nodded at her mum in thanks. A nurse came in and helped Gemma sit up and checked her vitals.
“Sorry. I’m feeling ok, sore. But wait why are you guys here?” Gemma said as the nurse left us alone again.
“Mum called me. The Hay’s let us come back to see you” Jessie explained as Gemma boyfriend came in the door with hot drinks for everyone and a big stuffed giraffe for Gemma (her favourite animal).
We spent the next few hours by Gemma’s bed doing our best to keep her mind off her injuries. Every now and then she would wince in pain and a nurse would check her. We left around lunchtime when the jetlag started to hit us. We bid our goodbyes and left Mary, Richard (Jessie’s dad) and Ashton (Gemma’s boyfriend) to stay with Gemma.
Jessie and I caught a taxi to my house where we were welcomed by my mum and dad. We had some sandwiches and a drink then went to my bedroom.
I chucked on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt before crawling under my blankets. Jessie pulled off his pants and shirt before he crawled under the blankets with me in just his boxers. I rolled over to face Jessie and put my head on his chest. I let out a sigh as Jessie started to rub my back.
“Hey beautiful. How are you feeling?” Jessie asked me as he softly kissed my forehead.
“I’m ok, a bit shaken up seeing Gem like that. I really don’t like hospitals” I mumbled as I felt tears well in my eyes.
“Beautiful. It’s ok. Gem’s going to be fine. You don’t have to come to the hospital if you don’t want to” Jessie said as he continued to rub my back.
“No, no I want to be there for Gem and your family. She’s like a sister to me. I can’t not be there for her” I replied as I looked up into Jessie’s eyes. The deep brown irises bringing a calming sense to my body.
“Ok. Did you maybe want to get Gem some stuff to make her room a bit more bright?” Jessie asked.
“Yeh that’s a good idea. It was odd seeing her in such a plain room with no colour. Considering her hair is a different colour each week and her room is painted like 3 different colours and covered in photos and trinkets” I replied as I pecked Jessie on the lips.
“We will go to the shops tomorrow before we go to the hospital. Now lets get some sleep beautiful” Jessie said as he switched off the bedside light. The sun still leaving the room bright enough so I could make out Jessie’s body.
“I love you handsome”
“I love you too beautiful
