I hesitated a moment. With tears in my eyes, I stuttered, "It's.... It's c-cancer?"
"Please have no worries, we caught it in a very early stage. But it is spreading quickly from your foot. I have two options for you, Miss Thompson. One, you can try chemo, or two, you can have it amputated. Neither one promises permanent removal, but-"
"I'll have it amputated. I want it done tonight," Hayley blurted, interrupting the doctor and making a very bold choice.
"Hayley, you need to think this over-" I began.
"Brendon, my leg, my choice. If the amputation can give me a chance of getting rid of it, I want to do it as soon as I can. Please, just don't hate me for this," Hayley said.
"You really want it done now?" Dr. Mahrati asked. Hayley nodded. "Alright. I'll get some paperwork filled out and send you down soon."
He left the room and I looked at Hayley. "Hey, I won't hate you for this. I'm not the kind of person who does that. I think it's bullshit. But this whole bone cancer thing is scaring me. I'm afraid of what it could do."
"It won't change me, if that's what you mean," Hayley replied. "Besides, my leg was done months ago. I'd rather be without a leg than with a bad one."
"I hope it doesn't change you. But as long as you're happy, I'm happy," I told her, then realizing it was really crappy. "That was the cheesiest thing ever."
We laughed, and so did Dallon. We talked for a while until Dr. Mahrati walked back into the room. "Okay, a few things before we take you down for the amputation. It will take 2 or 3 weeks before you get a temporary prosthetic leg, and 2 and a half months before you are fully recovered and get your official leg. And I understand you are travelling, as you told one of the nurses, but you will have to rest and not walk around until you're healed enough to put on your temporary leg. We can send a travelling doctor with you so we can keep a record on your healing process and they will let you know what to do and what not to do."
"That sounds fine by me." Hayley seemed so okay with having cancer in her leg. I didn't get it, but she has always been one for these two things: no giving a fuck, and not putting up with shit. Which is why I love her.
"Alright. Let's get the sedative in your IV and then we can take you down for surgery."
Dr. Mahrati injected a yellow vile of liquid into the top of Hayley's IV bag, then waited for a few minutes for her to fall asleep. Nurses rushed in and rushed her bed and IV down to the surgery wing. Dallon and I followed her until we were at a sterile zone, where we couldn't enter.
I sat in one of the chairs left in the waiting room with Dallon and pulled out my phone. I went on Instagram and started a live stream. Over 300 people already joined.
"Hey guys. Uh, if you weren't at tonight's show, you probably have no idea why Dallon and I are in the hospital right now," I aimed the camera at Dallon for a moment, then back at me. "On our first night on tour, I introduced my girlfriend Hayley to everyone. I told everyone at tonight's show how she was shot in her hip a few months ago. Tonight I jumped off the stage because she was screaming in pain. She was rushed to the hospital and we found out she..... Hayley has bone cancer in her bad leg and she's getting it removed as we speak."
