Hayley's POV

I heard a vehicle pull out of the driveway, which woke me up. Why would Brendon be leaving in the middle of the night. I looked out the bedroom window and saw his car was still here. Who could it have been?

I walked out into the living room to find Dallon on the couch watching tv with the volume low. "Dallon? What are you doing here? Where's Brendon?"

"Oh, hey Hayley. Did I wake you?" I shook my head no. "Brendon had some things he needed to take care of, but he didn't want you at the house alone. So he had me stay over here until he gets back."

"Cause that's not suspicious at all. Where is he, Dallon?" I asked with my hands on my hips now.

"I honestly don't know. He just said he needed to do something and he didn't know when he'd be back." Dallon raised his hands in a surrender. I didn't fully believe him, but I dropped it anyways.

"Brendon will be Brendon...." I sighed. "Anyways, I haven't heard from you in a while, Dal. How's life?"

"Uh.... Good, I guess," Dallon answered awkwardly.

"Wow. I just realized something," I thought aloud. "I probably couldn't ask a more awkward question."

Both Dallon and I laughed. For another 2 hours, Dallon and I talked and laughed about anything and everything.

Dallon's POV

Throughout the two hours I had spent with Hayley, I found myself feeling.... Out of place. It had always been a problem for me when I knew Brendon and Hayley liked each other, but even more of a problem when they originally broke up, and I learned Brendon still had feelings for her.

I had always been 'that friend' to Brendon that would be there to talk about the girl he likes. I had never told Brendon about the girl I liked, mostly because it was hard -even for me- to like her.

And I guarantee by now you know who that is. It's Hayley. I've loved Hayley for years, ever since Brendon introduced me to her way back when. It started as the 'oh, she's pretty' kind of like, to the 'oh my god, I couldn't see myself loving anyone else in the world' kind.

Once I got to know Hayley was when so really started to fall in love with her. And I know what you're thinking, it's bad. Like, so bad because she's engaged to my best friend. Well, it's not like you can choose who you fall in love with, but even it you could, I might still have picked Hayley.

But as the night progressed, I realized again why I had fallen for her years ago. And it's been years since I last saw Hayley, but no matter how long it is between the times you see someone, you can still be in love with them and pick up right where you left off.

And for me, that would be broken hearted. Because Hayley is about to marry my best friend.

Suddenly, I was broken out of my thoughts by the sound of a loud car pulling up into the driveway. Both Hayley and me looked at the front door as Dan walked in, followed by a black-eyed, bloody-nosed and busted-lipped Brendon.

The first thing Brendon noticed was Hayley sitting next to me on the couch- awake. Then he said these two simple words, "Well, shit."

"Oh my god, Brendon! What the hell happened?" Hayley asked with concern as she rushed to inspect her fiancee's beat up face. "Are you okay? Where the hell were you?"

"Hayley, I'm fine," Brendon grabbed Hayley's arms lightly and held them away from his face before she put them down herself. "Why are you up?"

"And why are you beaten half to death? Especially in the middle of the night when you sneak off without saying a word, then leaving me with your best friend?" She turned quickly to me to say, "No offense, Dal," Then she turned back to Brendon. "But still, B. What the hell?"

"Look, Hayley, I knew from the second I left it was a mistake. I just.... What they said on the news today got me so angry. I couldn't think of any other way to stop being mad than to take it out on the guy who made me mad in the first place. So-"

"You got in a fight with Ryan?!? Brendon, what the hell is wrong with you?!? Why the fuck didn't you just talk to me?!?" Hayley yelled.

"Hayley, I-"

"You what, Brendon? Didn't think I would want to talk about it? Well you were fucking right! Of course I don't want to talk about it, but if you were really that angry....?!?"

"Hayley, I'm done trying to reason with you! You are so fucking difficult sometimes!! And you wonder why we broke up last time!!!" Brendon yelled even louder than Hayley.

The room went quiet. I knew that really hurt both of them for Brendon to say that. Their first break up was really rough for both of them, so Brendon saying that meant he was really mad at her.

"If that's how you really feel...." Hayley said with tears in her eyes. "Here's your stupid ring back. I don't want it anymore."

Hayley took off her engagement ring and left it on the counter, then walked out the door in her slides and without a jacket. Brendon just stood there, frozen. As if he couldn't move ever again.

"Now you've done it, Brendon. You really fucked up this time, asshole," I said after a moment of quiet, leaving the house to find Hayley. I didn't want her doing anything stupid.
