Chapter 11
A Deep Wound
It had been a week since the battle had occurred. They had landed at the island of Monte Cristo an Island just off the coast of Italy. The town there was a safe haven for pirates like her husband and was far enough from Spain to where she did not have to worry about the safety of the crew. They fixed up the ship and themselves while she took care of Thomas. He had been unconscious since the fight. She had Robert change Thomas into clean cloths and bath him so he would not get an infection. She stayed next to Thomas’s side waiting for him to wake up. She spent days pacing back and forth back and forth around the room waiting for him to wake up. It seemed like an eternity. A moan came from the bed and she rushed towards him and knelt by the bed. She took a firm grip on his hand. “Im here Thomas.” She said as his eyes burst forth. And looked at her tenderly and weakly. He closed his eyes and fell asleep. She sighed and got up and growled out loudly. She was so sick of waiting on him to wake up. Angelica calmed herself down knowing it was not his falt he was injured. She just hated that all she could do was stand there. Angelica walked out the door and up on the deck.
“Robert watch Thomas!” She ordered as she walked off the gang plank. Robert yelled something at her as she left but she didn’t listen. She was sick of waiting around for him to wake up she couldn’t take it anymore. Just because he was a pirate did not mean she had to be.********************************************************************************************************
Robert sat on the side of his brother’s bed waiting for him to wake up. Two days prior his brothers wife ran off and left him on the ship to die. He shook his head not believing that Angelica just ran off and left him. Thomas eyes fluttered open and he looked around the room. “Why Angelica? When he needs you the most you leave. I guess you just saved his life earlier out of pure gratitude that he did not take yours. But didn’t he mean anything to you? Or was it all a trick to get us all to care for you and let down our guard so that you could just walk right off the ship and run away” He thought frustratingly as he looked down at his weak older brother. His brother tried to sit up but struggled so Robert had to prop him up himself. Robert went and got Thomas a drink of water holding the cup to his parched lips. Thomas licked his lips as they were dry. Thomas got a small cloth and dipped it in a basin filled with water and touched it to his brothers lips trying to relieved some discomfort. He then wiped his brothers face getting all the sweat off his brow.
“Where’s Annie?” He asked as he looked up at the extremely tired Robert.
“Your guess is as good as mine. Two days ago she yelled at me to watch you and stomped off!” He growled angrily.
“She left. . .” He whispered in disbelief. Robert nodded frustratedly.
“Yes she’s gone! And you know what I am glad she is gone!” He yelled and stood up. “All she did was distract us from our duties! That man was right she is bad luck and we never ever should have allowed her to stay! Be happy brother that woman is gone and we are better off without her… She is..” The door creaked open and Angelica came in carrying a large crate.
“She is what Robert?” She said sarcastically as she sat the box down on the desk and began to rifle through it. She got out a few little jars filled with weird ointments.
“She’s…. Back see brother I told you she would return and you were worried… Im going to go uhh…. Check on the men. Bye!” he ran outside of the room causing Angelica to burst laughing. Thomas watched her as she helped him sit up at the edge of the bed. She took off his shirt and unwrapped his bandages. His back wound was the largest he had received. The Spanish physician sewed him up both on his back and front but the back would take several months to heal. She was most worried about infection. She grabbed one can and started to rub it gently on his back.
“Sorry I know it stinks but it was the best I could find. I got enough of it made for the rest of the crew and for later battles. This should fight off infection.” She finished with his back and then started on the three slashes on his front. She made sure to to hurt him as she delicately put the salve on him. He watched her not speaking. She figured he was just weak and tired. She wrapped his chest up again and gently laid him back down. She covered him up with the red silk covers and smiled patting his legs. He continued to stare at her.
“Why did you come back?” He said puzzled. Angelica leaned forward.
“What do you mean why did I come back?” He gave her a look like you know what I mean woman answer the question . She sighed and leaned over and kissed his lips sweetly and softly. “Because I love you my husband” She whispered as their faces were still centimeters apart. Angelica figured he was too weak to comprehend what she was saying, but his arms went up and grabbed her waist and pulled her body towards him. He kissed her passionately. She was almost on top of his body as his lips started to roam over her neck and shoulders. It felt so good to be kissed by him but this was not the time. “Tommy… Tommy darling you need to stop” She said caringly.
“Never mi amore” He whispered through a kiss. She laughed and pulled away.
“You must. Your body cant stand up much longer.” She went and layed beside him.
“But Im not standing.” He said sadly looking at her. She laughed again.
“You know what I mean. When you are feeling better there will be plenty of time for that.” He groaned and grabbed her head and kissed her once more before admitting defeat.
