Chapter 31
We Have Arrived and Bad Timing
Angelica threw up over the edge of the vessel. The Vengeance was not the place for a pregnant woman. Alyssa rubbed her back as she held her young son in her arms. Daniel’s son had bright blonde hair like he had. The boy had Alyssa’s nose but Daniel’s bright blue eyes. The child had been a happy addition to the crew and George had taken quite a shine to him. George came over and took Daniel the second from Alyssa’s hands so that she could fully concentrate on helping the nauseated Angelica. “Mommy’s ready!” She yelled at her stomach as she turned around facing Alyssa.
“The ninth month is the hardest as you well know.” Alyssa said wiping Angelica’s brow with a cool damp rag. Nodding Angelica waddled across the deck heading towards Thomas who was at the wheel. Only he knew how to get there so he had been at the wheel day and night. Once there his strong arm enveloped her. He kissed her on the top of the head and sighed.
“We are almost there. By the end of the day we will arrive. And I know the perfect place right off shore to hide the Vengeance. I will go in alone for the council started a few days ago. It will be best I don’t want to harm anyone.” She nodded not liking the idea of him going alone. Robert sulked by the wheel and went down the steps.
“Robert has been so down since McGovern’s death. . . We all miss him but it seems to have stung him the most.” Thomas was quite for a few minutes not acknowledging what she said.
“McGovern protected my brother and I from Hodges. . . We called him Uncle McGovern. He adored Robert and protected him much more than me. He had too for I could not always be there to look after him. Hodges had me attached to his hip. The devil was determined to have me be just like him. He was demented. And by spending more time with that monster only furthered my resolve to be nothing like him.” He snarled the last bit out as Robert knelt down to play with the now five year old Nathanial. The two shot marbles across a circle trying to hit the others out. It was funny to watch for the marbles rolled with each wave that struck the ship.
Night came and they had arrived at Elba off Italy. They hid amongst jagged rocks that was only about a mile off Elba’s coast. Giant exotic ships were docked all over the island and soldiers lined the beach front. Angelica watched Thomas get ready to go attaching the Bloodstone sword to his belt. Walking over to her he kissed the top of her head.
“Do not worry I will be careful my sweet.” She nodded as her face was filled with worry. Angelica’s stomach was more nauseated the usual as she walked up with Nathanial and Thomas to the top deck. Thomas picked up his son and kissed him. “I will be back soon. Now listen to your mum.” Nathanial nodded as Thomas put him down. Eyston kissed his wife once more and headed over to the away boat. Robert was standing there frowning at his elder.
“I still think I should be going with you.” He growled as Thomas step inside the small boat.
“Protect my family, trust me when I say I will be fine.” Robert rolled his eyes and retorted a snide comment. Thomas was lowered down into the water. Once the ropes were released he slowly and silently paddled out towards Elba.
Angelica’s finger nails dug into the wooden railing as she watched him leave. Then she felt a wet sensation in her lower extremities. Looking down she saw a clear wet puddle. “Oh no. . .” She thought as a hard contraction hit her insides. The pain was excrutating and she called out for Alyssa. Alyssa grabbed Angelica before she collapsed in her own body fluids.
“It will be ok. Robert!” Alyssa yelled happy that they were far enough from Elba to where there voices could not be heard. Robert rushed over and saw his sister-in-laws predicament. “Carry her to her room now! I need to go get my Daniel’s bag. George!” George had the sleeping Jr. in his arms. “Take Nathanial, Chipo, and Jr. to my cabin now!” He nodded and grabbed the crying five year old.
“What’s wrong with Mummy!???!!” He wailed as Robert carried her down the stairs back to his brother’s cabin. Alyssa knelt down at the little boy.
“Mummy’s having a baby and she needs you to be brave for her and daddy. Ok? Now go with George.” The boy reluctantly took George’s hand as Chipo came running out of his room and up the stairs.
“I am not staying around for that!” he exclaimed. Moaning Alyssa got up and ran to her room and grabbed Daniel’s old bag. George came in toting the two children with Chipo following. Alyssa rushed past them heading towards Angelica. Once in the room she opened the bag as a pale Robert sat next to her with an extremely red hand. His sister-in-law had been squeezing his hand at every contraction. Alyssa took off her friends underwear and looked to see how dilated she was.
“You still have at least an hour my dear.” Alyssa sighed. Angelica’s face was red with pain and sweat beaded down her face. “Robert go get two basin’s one filled with cool water the other with hot, then get as many sheets as you can find. After that get scissors and some thread just in case.” He nodded and went bolting out the door. “Well that will keep him busy for a bit. He looked as if he was going to faint, and I cant have him passed out I may need him later.” She replaced Robert next to Angelica and let the pirate wife squeeze her hand. A few tears ran down Angelica’s face.
“I wish Thomas was here!” She cried out as Alyssa nodded she had said the same thing when she gave birth to Daniel the second.
