Chapter 14

INSANITY! INSANITY!!

I-N-S-A-N-I-T-Y!!!!

Robert

Robert watched as Thomas ran off towards the carriage. He sighted knowing his brother was going to be gone a long time. He sat on the gang plank and waited for his brother to return. He cursed at himself. He had fallen asleep in his hammock and had left a fifteen year old to keep watch. The boy had been eager to prove himself, and Robert gave him a chance. It was Robert’s turn to have watch, and he had figured that because they were docked that he would have little to worry with the boy watching. Unfortunately, they hit the boy hard over the head with  the butt of a gun. The boys head had a gash on his head and blood draining from his skull. Robert ordered McGovern to bind his head then to attend to George, if George was still alive.

Robert fell asleep on the gang plank. The sun batted down on his skull. He looked up and tried to judge the time. It looked to be about noon. He looked at his bright red side and sighed. “That’s going to hurt for a week” He thought as he looked in the direction his brother had ran. In the distance he saw a straggling figure that limped as it walked. When the figured got closer he saw that it was Thomas. He limped hard on his right foot. Thomas crept closer and closer at a slow pace. Robert noticed his feet, they were bloodied. His brother was covered in sweat and dust . He held a purple bandana. Robert wondered why then he remembered that Angelica had stolen Thomas’s bandana because she took it in his sleep. His gun was gone and his cutlass was in his right hand. When Thomas got to the gang plank his feet had pools of blood on their bottom. His eyes were going in and out, in and out furiously. He pointed the at his brother as his eyes looked at him twitching madly. He limped up the wooden plank and onto the deck. Five men were helping George trying to keep him alive as blood pooled from his chest.

A young boy leaned against the mizzen mast a bandage on his head. The boy had blonde hair that had flicks of blood in it as he had his eyes shut tightly. The child’s hands clinched onto the deck as if trying to keep the world still, considering the circumstances. Thomas went into his captains quarters and slammed the door. A click came from the lock as it was bolted shut. Robert listened as his brother started to mumble something incoherent. He sighed and walked back on deck. McGovern walked up to the boy and sat down. The boy opened his light hazel eyes, and looked at the nice old. McGovern had red-graying hair and was slightly wide in the stomach. He had brown teeth but bright eyes. The old codger was a nice man, but an old sea dog. His manners were crass and he had a good Irish temper at times, but he was sweet, kind and gentle as well. The boys eyes started to tear up as McGovern put his arm reassuringly over the boys shoulder. He started to talk to the boy. On occasion the child would nod and eventually he smiled and laughed. Robert grinned slightly wishing he knew what old McGovern had said to the lad.

A loud crash came from the direction of the Captains quarters. A gun shot went out loudly ringing throughout the ship. McGovern and Robert stared at each other and then they both went running towards his brother’s room. Robert tried the knob and banged on it trying to was open the door. McGovern helped him as they both tried to break the door down. A loud yell came from the room as a cutlass went through the door right between him and McGovern. The two of them looked at each other and ran up the steps afraid of what might come next. And predictably loud gunshots rang out through the door. Robert and McGovern took cover behind some railing as the bullets flew through the air. Robert sighed and leaned against the railing slowly sliding down and sighed. This was going to be a long day.

When Robert woke up the moon was shining brightly and their was no noise coming from his brothers room. He stretched and yawned widely. He nudged McGovern who sleepily opened his eyes. Robert’s thumb pointed behind him to Thomas’s room and McGovern nodded, as the two of them got up. They went slowly to the door and listened. No sounds came from within. Robert went to turn the knob only to find that the knob was not there. He sighed looking at the hole were the knob used to be. Robert shook his head and examined the rest of the door. Multiple bullet holes had penetrated the door. A sword stuck through the center. He slowly and gingerly opened the door to his brothers room unsure what he would find.

Thomas’s room was in complete and utter disarray. The desk was hacked in four separate pieces that were spread throughout the room. Each one was in a different shape. The throne that sat behind had bullet holes through the back of the chair. The cushion of the chair was split in half. The red velvet was sliced in multiple locations. Robert could not locate Thomas as he continued to survey the room carefully. Everywhere he stepped something was broken or destroyed. Priceless china was smashed into millions of pieces across the floor. Mixed with the china was stuffing from the pillows that used to be on the bed. He took a step over a piece of the once whole desk. He went to the balcony doors and examined them. Each had been smashed. The curtains were torn down and ripped. He opened one of the doors and looked out onto the balcony. Thomas was not there. A small bloody footprint was on the balcony. Robert leaned down and examined the print. Thomas touched his finger to the print and felt that it was dried. He had not been out there for a while. Robert looked over the edge of the balcony railing and saw that there were no grip marks on the railing. He sighed confident that Thomas had not fallen off the boat, or at least he hoped that he didn’t. He stepped back into the room his boot crushing glass as he took each step. He went to the closet and opened the door hoping his brother was in the room. The closet was untouched. Robert found it strange. No clothing was touched during his brothers rage. Well, almost no clothing. Hanging next to his favorite white uniform was the wedding dress that Angelica wore the day they got married. The two were hanging on the old antique full length mirror remained unbroken. The deliqute carvings on the side were untouched. Every piece of glass was broken except the mirror in the closet. He looked underneath the clothing that was hung and could not find Thomas underneath any piece of clothing. He walked out the door and then looked at the doors next to the closet. He turned a knob and was surprised to find it unlocked. The room was in pieces worse than normal. Many of the tables were overturned and metal was proliferated all around the room. He would have tried to reach the other doors but there was no path to them and he would have had to climb over them. Robert eyes scanned the room for any sign of life, but still no Thomas. He sighed deeply and closed the door. He was lucky that the moon shone bright that night.

McGovern searched on the other side of the room and scratched his head as he looked at the fallen bed. The bed had collapsed on itself. The frame was sideways being held up by the wall. The feather mattress was opened up and little feathers were all over that area of the Captain’s quarters. McGovern lifter the mattress looking underneath and sighed a deep sigh of relief. McGovern motioned for Robert to come over to him and he did quietly. Thomas was laying unconscious underneath the mattress. Robert helped McGovern push the mattress off Thomas. Robert whispered for McGovern to go and get a hammock for him to put Thomas in. McGovern left as Robert knelt down and looked at his brothers tear stained face that was drenched in sweat. He left the room and came with rags and a basin of water. He washed Thomas clean of all the, blood, sweat, tears, dirt, and anything else vile that was on his body. McGovern started to hang up the hammock as Robert went to the closet and got his brothers black poufy pants and a clean white shirt. He changed Thomas and then went to attend to his brothers bloody feet. Robert first started to clean his feet, and then wrapped them gently. He put some oversized boots on Thomas’s feet, so that they would not be hurt by the glass and chaos on the floor.

Robert asked McGovern to help him carry Thomas to the hammock. McGovern helped Robert place Thomas in the hammock. McGovern found a half ripped bed sheet and placed it on Thomas. Robert yawned and looked at his brother. He shook his head sadly and went to get his hammock to hang up next to his brother, and then take a long rest.
