The Bloodstone
Chapter 28
Thomas
The mountain went at an easier angle near the top. They walked carefully up the rocks. Thomas felt some blood pooling in his right boot as rocks had sliced at his feet. He was not the only one limping. McGovern struggled as they walked forward. Sweat was laced all over his person. The old sea dog was fading. Thomas cursed himself for taking McGovern. He should have known better then to have taken him, but he needed his most trusted men with him. Thomas and Robert trailed behind McGovern. The two brothers sighed as the hot sun beated down upon them. McGovern soon started to swerve as he walked. The elderly man missed stones and tripped as he walked forward. Thomas and Robert hurried to the mans aid. McGovern growled and pushed them away.
“I am fine! I am just a little tired is all. We can rest after we get there.” He laughed and walked to a large stone. Not looking where he was going he fell. Thomas and Robert ran to the top of the rock. Looking down they saw a huge pit before them. McGovern’s terrified yell faded as he fell further into the earths depths. Robert fell to his knees and put his head in his hands sobbing. Thomas knelt beside him and placed his arm around his younger brother, a tear running down his own cheek.
“He’s gone Robert, he’s gone. . .” Picking his brother up by the shoulders he shook him roughly. “He’s GONE! No pull it together we will honor him when we get back to the ship not before. We need to return soon, and we are almost there.” Thomas began to go around the pit when he saw a flag.
“Have you no heart!” Robert cried following him. Thomas sighed and turned.
“I loved him! The same as you. He was like my uncle but I will not defile his death by giving up on what we set out to do. He knew what the costs were so did you! Now we continue on!” Thomas growled loudly at his brother. His mane flowed behind him as he walked forward towards the flag. The mist reappeared and Thomas sighed. “Bring it on” he whispered to himself
The mist Thomas stood at the pits edge sobbing. Out of the seven five remained. Two had fallen into the pit.
“How stupid could they have been to forget such a thing!” He cried out loud curising the heavens. A tall armomred man came up behind him and took the box that Thomas had laid on the ground. Thomas stood up and grabbed it from the burly raven haired man. The tall man glared at him.
“Calm down Thomas. They were fools! We are almost there not long now. He shoved him forward.” Thomas glared and walked through real Thomas as the mist disappeared.
Thomas looked back at Robert and pointed in the direction the men disappeared too. “That way” He called to Robert. Robert nodded and followed Thomas up the side. The mountain started to return to its original angle. Thomas and Robert climbed. The journey to the ledge above seemed never ending. Just when they thought they got close it seemed to distance itself from them. The brothers fought against what seemed an ever expanding mountain.
“Is it getting higher!” Robert yelled loudly as a deep fog encroached upon them.
“Magic!” Thomas cried down to his younger brother. Thomas foot slipped but he grabbed hold quickly before he fell to his death. Hours later they reached the ridges edge. Both panted heavily and collapsed from pure exaughstion. Thomas could see a flag at the entrance of the cave but he could not force himself to move towards it as he fell into a deep unnatural sleep.
