Chapter 27
Alexander’s Resting Place
Thomas
The charred earth decayed and transformed into tiny rocks as the transitioned to the mountain. Thomas clinged to the mountains side as he climbed up the steep peak. The map was secured inside his shirt as each rising stone proved to be a hard obstacle to the sea worn men. Robert tried his best to help the older McGovern up the mountain, but that was difficult when he too was struggling. Eyston carefully placed his feet as he rose higher and higher up the mountains face. His hands bled from the scratches the rocks embedded in his flesh. The mountain seemed only to become more treacherous with each maneuver up. A flag was situated over a man sized opening in the mountains side. A broken tree limbed stuck out over the flag. Thomas made his way over to it. The pirate captains foot slipped and he went falling down the mountain. Robert grabbed a hold of his brother’s boot.
“You fool. You are going to get us all killed!” Robert yelled as he swung his elder brother up to were he could grab hold of the mountain beside him. Thomas found a hold and his footing as he nodded a thanks to his younger brother.
“We will not die.” He chuckled. “But if we do, lets make sure we hid our bodies for Angelica will find a way to raise us up and kill us again.” Robert laughed heartedly at his brothers comment.
“Very true Thomas very true” He said as he continued his ascent. Thomas climbed up to the hole and propelled himself inside it. The world around him soon shifted again, the mist returned as he saw men hauling the covered body up the mountain side. A rope was over the branch above. The young man hauled it up with all his strength.
“Hurry I hear the branch cracking!” The young man cried as the advisors appeared behind him. They grabbed the rope and hauled it up with him. They got the body up there and into the hole just as the branch gave way. The boy sighed with relief and sat down next to the body. Reginald patted him on the shoulder.
“Good job Thomas.” The young man called Thomas grined and looked at the body.
“Have you prepared the stone?” Thomas asked as the advisors looked at him.
“Yes it is a flat marble were we will leave him. The Bloodstone will be place in its original resting place at the mountains top just beyond the deep crevice. I don’t want the two to be buried together.” One said sternly. The rest entered the cave and went towards the back carrying the body. The mist dissolved as McGovern and Robert climbed inside. Both breathed heavily. Robert laded down tired from the arduous climb.
“Please tell me the Bloodstone is in here?” Robert exclaimed through a deep inhaled breath. Thomas shook his head no.
“Higher up almost to the very top.” Turning Thomas knelt at the cave’s entrance in the direction of the dead buried king. He knew to visit the burial place and see the body was certain death. For none who journeyed to pay homage to the body never returned. The sea captain did not know if it was because of the sea or because of what lied beyond, but he was not going to take any chances. Robert looked at Thomas strange behavior.
“What are you doing?” Robert sat up as he asked his question.
“Kneeling before a great man that lies beyond brother.” Shrugging Robert stood and brushed himself off. McGovern groaned and did the same not wanting to move.
“We need to go, before the light dims in the sky.” McGovern said pointing up at the fading sun. Thomas nodded and took out the map examining its contents carefully.
“We are almost there. We have past the half way point.” Rolling it back up and tying it with a string, Thomas placed it in his shirt once more. He climbed out first and headed to the next destination on the map that would lead them to the Bloodstone.
