40 | Kai
Luke and I walked hand in hand down the frosted pavement and we talked about basically anything and everything until we reached the small little cafe on the corner of the street, it wasn't too big and only had enough room for two decently sized groups but in my opinion they made the best hot chocolate which is much needed when the weather is only getting colder.
Luke knows my order by heart so when we walk into the small little shop, the bell ringing behind us, he goes up to order whilst I go and reserve out booth. The booth was small and compact but sat in a desolate corner of the quaint, little coffee shop with its worn out green leather seats and the walls around decorated with artwork that I found oh so interesting, but Luke found oh so boring, it was the ideal seat for us both. Away from the world, away from everyone, just us two and our obscenely sugary hot chocolates as we talk about whatever we wanted.
It had become a routine for us, something to do before classes started up fully again, he picks me up from my dorm and Finley yells some ridiculous motherly quote about having me back before the street lights turn on then we go and have some hot chocolate and essentially rant about our day.
So that's exactly what we were doing at 12PM one April afternoon, ranting about our lives.
"You know what? You're right Luke, your day was worse than mine."
"I don't know Kai how can a crappy rehearsal possibly compare with being followed to class by the fluffiest white dog on the planet." Luke's voice became high pitched as he basically failed in attempting to imitate my voice, the sudden squeak in his voice brought a smile to my face as I lifted a hand from my mug to cover my mouth as I laughed,
"I don't- I don't sound anything like that." I managed to make out between wheezy giggles,
Luke just sat smiling on the opposite end of the table as he picked at the tab on his coffee cup, I knew he was thinking about saying something but just didn't know if he should.
If picked up on a lot of Lukes quirks over the last few months, like how he bites his lip and covers most of his face when he's trying not to laugh or how his nose scrunches up just the slightest bit when he feels a little uncomfortable and my favourite is when he throws himself back when he laughs because in that moment, in that one moment, he looks like a carefree teen with no problems at all.
I began to take note of this little tick of his whenever he wanted to say something just a couple of weeks ago, he would mess with whatever he had in his hands and nibble at his lip ring.
It's the exact same thing as he was doing so I decided to ask about it, my curiosity getting the best of me.
"What's wrong Luke?" I asked, he seemed to visibly tense up for a moment before letting out a slightly nervous chuckle, tapping the lid on his cup a few times with his thumb before looking up,
"Well you know how the Frat and the Sorority had this little competition?"
"Yeah."
"Which the Frat won by the way." He gloated proudly and I playfully rolled my eyes at his as he shoved me with his elbow, playfully scoffing along, "There's a party tonight to celebrate and I was wondering if you wanted to go with me, to- to the party."
We sat in silence for a moment as I contemplated the offer, sure going to a party with Luke would be fun but I'm not really the biggest party person. I much prefer sitting at home whilst binging on junk food and YouTube videos until early hours in the morning.
"I'm fine, I don't really feel like it." I shrugged nonchalantly, noting how his nervous smile dropped ever so slightly and immediately feeling guilty for it,
He seemed to think something over for a second or two, clasping his hands around his to go cup, "Are you sure, you don't have to feel weird because it's not your sorority anymore. I mean you still helped out at much as anyone there."
"Luke I'm perfectly contempt with just staying home and watching the office, again." I started, cutting off the short ramble he'd started to embark on, "Besides I'd just feel like that annoying little brother you were forced to drag along with you."
He pursed his lips as he continued to play with his cup, seeming as though he was thinking about what to say next. It made me nervous.
"I'm asking because I want you to go with me Kai," He started, sort of mumbling but he spoke just loud enough for me to hear, "Because believe it or not I actually like spending time with you."
I felt a giddy smile spread across my lips but ultimately knew I was going to decline the offer as sweet as I found it, just because I don't do parties, I do Netflix and snack marathons to procrastinate revising for tests coming up at the end of the year.
I think Luke already knew my answer because he became kind of glum, staring at his hands and swinging his legs but I wasn't going to put myself in any situation where I didn't feel completely comfortable and as much as it pained me to say no, I was adamant on my decision.
"Luke, I'd love to." He perked up a little, "But parties really aren't my thing, I'm just to reserved and shy. You should go and spend some time with the Frat, you probably haven't seen them much since you've gotten back."
He seemed to agree with me, nodding his head a little but still insisted on asking me multiple times before we left for our first lecture after the holidays which seemed to drag on forever, though I'm not complaining. I said no, as every time he'd asked me before.
"Are you positive you don't wanna go?"
I huffed out a breath, getting slightly frustrated but I also found it cute I guess, "Yes Luke, I'll be much happier sat in my room watching TV and copying up notes. Thank you though."
"Okay, only if you're sure." Luke pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time and his eyes widened slightly,"Shoot, I've got to go help set up for tonight but I'll see you after the party, yeah?" He began as he began walking in the opposite direction to me,
"Yeah, okay. I'll see you tonight."
