Chapter Three: "Black Underwear"
I COULDN'T SLEEP. All that I could do was think about Ethan for the next three nights. I was infatuated, or worse... I was in love. It couldn't be that though. I had known him for four years, and one little ice cream date couldn't have automatically make me mad over him. Could it? Maybe he had me. Hook, line, and sinker.
I was tired of seeing Mel and Grayson moon over each other. They had been dating for almost a month now, and I'm surprised neither of them had ditched each other. Mel's longest relationship was about a few months. Usually she hops boyfriends every few weeks.
Grayson's relationship reputation around school wasn't exactly that good either. He was known as a Hit and quit type of guy. Rumor has it half of the cheerleading squad lost their little skirts to him. Those aren't the only pompoms he's seen quite frankly.
My room door opened. In appeared a middle aged blonde woman with Hazel eyes.
"Dinner's ready sweetie. We're having tuna casserole, " Mom tells me.
I slightly nodded and focused my attention back onto my phone. Perri was texting me nonstop trying to convince me to do the pet shelter volunteering. I wouldn't mind doing it. It's just that I didn't want to promise her I'd do it and end up being busy that weekend.
I slammed my phone on my bed and headed towards the stairs. Before reaching the first step, I noticed that Mel had her door cracked open. She was on the phone with someone, so I decided to eavesdrop.
"You can't treat me like that? Why are you lying? I saw the two of you together on her story!" Mel yelled.
I couldn't hear the words of the person on the phone, but I could at least make out the tone of voice. It was Grayson for sure, and Mel hung up on him. I went downstairs before she could spot me. I did not want to be caught up in the middle of her wrath.
When I got downstairs Dad waved to me. I did the same. He was always on the phone dealing with business. Most wives hated that, but Mom understood under the circumstances that she was a business woman herself.
"Hey sweetie, "she said sitting the final plate down. I sat in my usual seat adjacent from Dad, which was opposite of Mel. I noticed something weird. There were five plates of food set out.
"Mom is someone joining us for dinner? " I asked.
"Just a friend," she answered.
What friend? I thought. Mel stumped down the stairs and mumbled all the way to her chair. She dug in without even waiting for Grace. Mom looked at her with a stern look, but didn't even bother to stop her from stuffing her face. A melody rang through the house.
"Oo, that's the door, " mom said extra giddy.
Mel slowed down her chewing. "What's that all about?" she asked.
I shrugged and moved my food around the plate. I began to hear mom talking to whoever our guest was in the living room. I didn't bother to try and see who it was. At this point I wasn't interested.
"Everyone, look who it is!," Mom announced. Mel almost choked on her food.
I looked at Grayson and gestured two fingers in the air as a greeting.
"Hey baby girl, " he croaks. It was no surprise that he was standing here in my house. My mother had loved the Dolans every since they had moved into town at the end of eighth grade year. We'd had dinner with each other's families multiple times. It was crazy how close our parents were.
Mel gave Grayson the death stare as he sat down beside me. He cocked his eyebrow. I knew people, and I could read them well. Right now I could definitely tell that Gray was enjoying the sweet torture he was reflecting on Melanie.
