Chapter Forty-One: "Hawaii(Part Three)"
"HONEY, LOOK AT THIS," Mom says pushing her magazine in my face. "Isn't this dress cute!?"
"Yeah, sure" I lie, rubbing sunscreen on my thighs. I desperately needed to lose weight. Stretch marks were popping up everywhere.
The guys, along with dad, had gone out on the jet skis, leaving Mom, Perri, Mel, and me to watch the children. Mel looked like a fucking zombie. She was pale and very thin with rings around her eyes.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
"Never better," she groans. She throws on a pair of Sunglasses and lays back on the beach towel. I spot a couple of scars on her arm in a perfect row.
I knew that Mel was a bit emotionally unstable in her teenage life, but I never knew that she had gone to such measures. I guess I finally understood why she wore long sleeves for a whole month one time.
"Let's have a girls night," I suggest. "Just the two of us to catch up on stuff."
"You don't wanna bring Perri?" she asks. She leans up on her elbows to look at me. Perri was down by the water with the twins.
"Nah, it's just gonna be our thing." I was surprised that mom didn't burst into the conversation. She had put on headphones anyway.
"So, you and Grant," I say, wondering how in the hell they were together. Mel raises her eyebrows quickly before letting them rest above her eyes again. She sits up and crosses her legs in the applesauce way.
"Well," she begins to explain. "We were just friends at first, but then things just got serious I guess. He started to like me again."
My mind wondered whether they had gotten serious feelings for him too or if she had become a gold digger. I wanted to believe the best in my sister, but she was shallow as hell.
"I'm happy for you," I try making myself believe. Grant was cute and all, but she had already hurt him once. I thought the poor guy would never recover.
Perri walks up holding Wyatt on her lap. Alongside her was Jermaine with Winter. I guess that meant that the guys were back from jet skiing already.
"I thought you guys were gonna be a while," I say to Jermaine as he hands me Winter. He sits down in the sand despite there being plenty of room on the beach towel.
"Your Dad isn't the best at driving a jet ski, so we all decided to bring it in early for his sake." He explains. "He claims he caught a cramp."
Mel starrs laughing and so does Mom who had taken off her headphones. I would've too if I had seen Dad walk up, holding his neck. Grayson was standing beside him, patting his back. Ethan, Malcolm, and Grant were behind them, life jackets in hand.
"I think we should call it a day," Mom suggests. We all agree with exchanged nods. I was hungry. I hadn't eaten breakfast, and it was past lunch time.

I grab the champagne bottle and start pouring the liquid in the glasses. Two glasses, one for me and one for Mel. As much as I had tried to lay off the drinking, I convinced myself that this was a necessary occasion. Tension could rise between my sister and me, especially in an empty room. We needed something to make us feel better.Everyone else had gone out to a dinner show. Mom would've wanted us to go, but she knew that this "bonding time" was much more needed.
"So, what movie are we watching?" Mel asks, drying her wet hair with a towel. She didn't have on an ounce of makeup, and if we were in public, guys would most likely go after me instead of her. She was an absolutely different person.
