Chapter Thirty-Five: "Heart Burn"

Grayson's POV

I WAKE UP WITH grogginess in my throat. My stomach had been growling a repetitive song, and I was tired of hearing it. Baby Girl was sleeping peacefully next to me. I roll over and hold her in my arms. I wasn't even going to attempt to fall back asleep. I just wanted to breathe her in.

I brush her hair away from her face. She moans, and I lean up as her eyes spring open and come to life.

"I didn't mean to wake you," I immediately say, looking at her. She rapidly blinks, adjusting her eyes to the streaming sunlight.

"Don't feel sorry. I was going to wake up soon anyway."she leans up too, her back meeting the bed frame.

I rub her thigh, and she grabs my hand to hold it. My stomach growls interrupting the moment.

"Somebody's hungry."

"Yeah, didn't eat much last night." I had my fight to thank for that.

She jumps to her feet and pops her back before letting out a yawn. "I'll make breakfast."

"No, it's okay. I'll do it," I argue, getting up. She shushes me and sits me back down.

"I insist."

I don't say another word. She leaves the room to go to the kitchen, and I follow.

"So pancakes, omelettes, bacon, and toast. Sound good?" she asks, looking over the side of the fridge.

"Yeah, it's actually making me hungrier," I joke, rubbing my stomach. It was starting to growl uncontrollably. I would usually sleep till about three in the afternoon without eating breakfast, but my sleep schedule had been Whack lately.

Baby girl cracks open some eggs. I watch as she mixes the pancake batter. She was smooth with it, but rushed.

"So what was the deal with you and Myra?" she askz to kill the awkward silence.

I laugh nervously. I never liked talking about my exes much; especially Myra. At least I was more comfortable with talking about her than Mel.

"What do you mean?"

She looks at me as she throws some egg shells in the trash. "I mean, what was your relationship like? Was she always such a..."

"Bitch? Yeah. She was always that."

"Then why go out with her?"

I shrug. "I dunno. I was popular, she was popular. It made sense."

"Same thing With Mel?"

"Yeah," I answer.

"And me?" she whispers.

I put my phone aside. "No."

"Yeah, I figured," she continues. "I know that I wasn't popular, so what happened?"

I smile at the ground. I didn't like getting too deep in my feelings, but Baby girl had changed that. It was easy to talk about her to someone else, but I never would've dreamt of expressing the way I felt to her. At least not now.

"You were different," I say. "Every girl that I had ever known had thrown themselves at me, but not you.  You denied me, and I was attracted to you. It was something about your rebellious behavior that got to me. I wanted to know why I couldn't have you. Why you were so interested in Ethan. I mean come on. Ethan? Really? He's not even that good looking."

She stops for a minute and looks at me." First, you and Ethan basically have the same face. Secondly, I wasn't that different, Grayson. I wrote in my diary about you numerous times. It's just that...living a fantasy is much more difficult then dreaming about it."
