Chapter Twenty-seven: "O"

"HE'S GONNA BE OKAY, Perri," I try to convince her. She was shaking and wouldn't calm down.

"I know. It's just that I don't want him to get arrested or something."

"It's fine. He won't. The police are looking for the dealer, not him."

Perri bites her nails. She barely had any, and the sight made me cringe. "I just can't believe he does drugs."

"Neither can I, but then again he and Turner are pretty close," I state as I try not to reveal too much.

"What does that mean?"

"Come on, Perri. Really?" I huff wondering if she was really that blind. "Turner's not a full on junkie, but I'm sure he has experimented before."

"That doesn't have anything to do with Max though!" she complains. She was in denial. It would take the whole state of California to convince her that Max did drugs, and I don't see why that was under the circumstances that he had already overdosed.

"Did they say what drug it was?" I ask attempting to change the subject.

She rubs her eyes and sniffles before trying to get the words out.
"Cocaine."

"Really? Wow." I wasn't that surprised, but for her sake, I pretended to be.

"I still can't believe this is happening. He was so sweet and he never showed any signs that he even did coke."

I pause to think. Maybe the signs were there, but she may have never noticed it. Grant did drugs for a while after he broke up with Mel, and everyone knew because of how red his eyes were. It was almost hard not to notice it. Mostly because he would always keep twitching, but he was a lucky one. His parents sent him to rehab. They were too rich and stuck up to have a drug addict son.

"Has he ever had red eyes?" I ask.

Perri looks at me as if she had been interrogated enough. I shrug my shoulders. I was only trying to help, and I wanted her to see that.

"Well...one time, but he told me that he was sleep deprived."

"Well that's a good excuse, I guess."

"Yeah. I guess if I knew what I know now...I could've helped."

"Don't blame yourself," I tell her "It's not your fault."

"Of course. Because it's never the person who feels bad's fault."

She made a good point. After the accident I couldn't help but blame myself for Grayson's condition, and everyone was telling me not to. It was a cruel position to be in, and I probably understood more than anyone at that moment.

I look out the window of the second floor of the hospital. The lobby was quiet. We weren't in the ER unit, so things were pretty chill. It had grown colder by the minute, and I was in terrible need of a jacket. My skin had begun to form little bumps, and I brush over them in attempt to warm myself.

"Have you seen him yet?" I ask, straying my attention away from the coldness.

"No. His Mom's on the way here though.

"Oh," I reply plainly. I had seen Max's dad multiple times, but never his mother. His dad was Asian, and looked much like him, only lighter. He was a nice guy. He read tons of books. Way too many if you asked me. That was probably why he was so smart. Max had obviously gotten that from him.

"Well I look forward to seeing her."

It seemed like a weird thing to say out loud, but it sounded good in my head.

"Baby," someone calls.

I quickly turn my body towards the sound. Turner was running towards me. He looked beat. I walk up to him before he could reach me and Perri.

"What are you doing here?" I growl. I was worried that Perri wouldn't like this. Turner was probably on her bad side right now.

"I just wanted to make sure Max's okay."

"Did you have something to do with this?"

"No. Why would you think that?"

"Um... Because you got him shot."

"That doesn't mean I forced drugs down his throat." Turner sasses, rolling his eyes.

I see Perri walking up to us, and he starts to panic.

"You need to leave," I whisper.

"Does she know-"

"Do I know what?" Perri interrupts Turner.

"Um... That Max and I are friends," he lies.

"Yeah. I know," she sniffles.

The atmosphere was quiet, and I felt weird. I had nothing to say. Both Perri and Turner looked uncomfortable too. Especially Turner. He was fidgety, and his pupils were dilated. He was definitely on something.

"We'll be right back, Perri," I say pulling Turner with me.

"Woah what's going on?" he asks as we get into the elevator.

"Are you that dumb!"

"What? What'd I do?"

I huff and curse a couple of times. Good thing the elevator was empty. I look up in the corner. There was a camera.

"What's going on?" Turner asks.

"We can't talk here."

He looks over my shoulder at the camera and immediately gets the memo.

I press the button to go to the ground floor. A few seconds later the elevator doors open.

I quickly pace out into the fresh air. The night breeze hit me, and I was finally warm. It was dark, but I could see clearly because of the city lights.

"What's wrong?" Turner finally asks again.

"Are you crazy!?" I yell. "Do you know how many cops and doctors are here. Any of them could've easily known that you were on something."

He looks down at the ground. "I'm... I'm sorry. I just wanted to see if Max was okay."

I sigh. It was very considerate of him, but I hated that he was this careless.

"Listen, just get out of here. Okay?"

"Okay."

"And if I were you, I'd get sober."

He smiles a smile of embarrassment. "I wish it were that easy."

"Yeah. Me too."

My phone buzzes. The two of us stop talking.

"One minute," I tell Turner.

The number was unfamiliar, but I answer anyway. It looked like a company number, so it must've been important.

"Hello," I answer looking out towards the moon. It was a waning gibbous, which just so happened to be my favorite.

"Miss Parker? " a voice answers.

"This is she," I respond.

Turner was staring at me. He obviously wanted to know what was up.

"Yes, this is nurse Carson, I have the results. I'll mail you a copy, but would you like to hear them now?"

I pause in the dead of night. Of course I wanted to know now. I couldn't wait a second longer.

I see my breath escape my mouth in the form of a white mist. It wasn't even cold out, so the sight spooked me even more.

In a trembling voice I answer. "Yes."
