Chapter Thirty-Eight: "It Never Ends"

"JADE," GRANT SAYS, pulling me into a hug. "Good to see you."

I was still frozen, too stunned to move. "G-good to see you too?" I stammer.

Mel glares at me and strikes a crooked smile. I anticipate the criticism that was sure to come with it. She probably hadn't changed one bit.

"Mel," I speak softly.

She walks over to me and pulls me into a hug. "Hey sis."

Sis? I take a moment to look at her. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she changed, but I knew better. I was confused as fuck.

"You look good," I complement her.

"Thanks, Grant's been treating me well," she tells me before falling into a laugh. I didn't find anything funny. I loved her, but she was a serious gold digger.

Grayson walks over to stand beside me, Winter in his arms. She holds out for me, and I quickly fall prisoner to her cuteness. Maybe she wasn't such a Daddy's girl.

"Long time, no see Grayson," Mel says looking him up and down. She was carefully studying him, and I was carefully studying her.

Grayson gives a small wave, keeping the greeting nice and short. Mel frowns. She obviously wasn't happy with his behavior, just as I wasn't with hers. I was good at reading body language.

Mom walks into the room with a big smile on her face. She greets Mel and Grant along with Perri and Jermaine.

After a while, Dad comes in and does the same. The two of them share a kiss and stand next to each other in a proud fashion.

"Since most of you are here, I think that this would be a good time to announce something very important," Mom begins.

Grayson and I look at each other and back to her. I had no idea of what she had to announce, but I hoped that it was good.

"We have booked a vacation and next week we all fly out to... Hawaii!"

"What!" I yell. Everyone rejoices in hapiness. Even the twins bounce up and down, but I wasn't too happy about going a vacation that would probably require me to bond with Mel.

"I can't. I can't do this," I begin to hyperventilate. I put Winter down, and start to freak out.

Grayson grabs my wrist and looks me in the eye.

"Baby, it's okay. Chill."

"Chill? Are you... Did you? Chill?" I ask in a low repressed tone.

He raisea his eyebrow at me, urging me to calm down. I was so captivated by the demanding glare in his eyes that I had no choice but to obey.

"Is everything alright?" Mom asks.

"Yes," Grayson quietly. "We're fine."

The doorbell rings. I made no effort to try and answer it. I was still stuck on the unwanted vacation.

By the hour, more guest spill in, filling the room with loud noises. I was in no way, shape, form, or fashion, pleased with my mother's announcement. I didn't want to go on vacation with Mel. She was conniving, evil, and twisted. I could barely even believe that we were related. Maybe I wasn't over everything.

A certain face emerges among the crowd. I instantly recognize it.

"Kyle?" I question, hugging my older brother. "What are you doing here?"

"Happily divorced," he answers. I laughed, but with concern.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that things didn't work out."

"It's fine. We were two different people, and we wanted different things in life. We're still good friends though."

"I can understand that," I say in attempt to soften the mood.

I look over his shoulder. In the corner, Grant and Mel appear to be having an argument. Kyle glances over at them too.

"She can't get along with anyone to save her life, can she?"

I shake my head. Mel would always be queen bitch. I had hoped for so long that it was just a phase, but she proved that it wasn't.

"I'm gonna go cut the cake," I decide, walking away. I go outside on the patio, and surprisingly find someone already doing it.

"Ethan?"

He smiles and sits the knife down to the side. He looked so good, and different. He had his hair cut similar to Grayson's, but anyone with good sense could tell them apart. We hug.

"Hey Jade,  he muffles into my shoulder. I instantly raise a brow, breaking the hug. It was the first time in a long time that I had heard him call me by my first name.

"That's new," I whisper to myself.

"What was that?"

"Nothing. It's good to see you."

I was a bad liar. I had no idea what to do with myself. My head was completely fucked up, and all I could think about was the damn vacation Mom wanted us to go on.

"We couldn't wait on you to cut the cake. The guest have needs," E says slicing a gigantic piece.

I roll my eyes and laugh, "Of course they do."

The rest of the day was a blur. I could barely function. I wanted Wyatt and Winter's Birthday to be absolutely perfect, but I wasn't in a mommy mood. I put on a fake smile, and acted accordingly even though I knew Grayson could see right through it. He didn't point it out though, and for that I was grateful.
