The times between you and Grillby grew more intimate each passing week. Pure joy and excitement plastered all over your face whenever he comes home or when the two of you are unable to make contact for the whole day.

It was the same for him also. Can not hold back a warm embrace to his closest human he ever has. Lots of hugs being shared, but the biggest hugs are reserved for one another if they are in bad weather of emotions. The relationship is unclear though. There is indeed genuine love involved but what kind of love?

It was questioned by specifically Sans and Undyne who are the most vocal about the dynamic. Is it really love at first sight or out of sympathy and pity. Such questions arise within the back of his head growing more and louder than ever before. How did such an event changes his whole life that quickly? A year is not complete. It could be the sudden shock and fast pace of events.

Then it would make no sense for these feelings for his beloved human. That is when the talk begins on a morning when Grillby is on his day off to confront the burning question.

"(Y/N)?" Grillby called out to the human in baggy pajamas of whateverness who is cooking the eggs and bacon.

The 'eternal flame' sits at the dinner table staring at the tired face that is regaining consciousness and energy from the preoccupied task and happiness for having the day with him.

"Yes?" Responding after a yawn escapes first pulls the frying pan away from the stove. Shifts the handle knobs upright making the orange-yellow flames become blue that flickers before disappearing.

A spatula is on one hand while the other is on the pan's handle tilting at an angle to push the breakfast contents onto the plates with the help of gravity.  Grillby was hesitant to speak nor asking.

He is afraid. Picking up the signs of his fear first is his tone speaking to you is hinted with force and strained. Second is his body posture his arm on in front of him crossed on the table and legs are cross like it is a barrier in defense for the worse. Even so, he leans forward with some confidence or trying to convince himself to take on the future and risk that is thrown at him. And his silence.

The god-awful silence from him as he stares at you reading away to understand how will you approach the situation. Hearing the ticks again from the clocks in the house. All in unison but that is just you the only one stood in the kitchen.

You set aside the kitchen cooking utensils in the sink giving Grillby a worried look. The problem he is having is eating him away. The light. Your light to a halt if not stopped right away.

"Grillby what's wrong?"

The body stiffened. Grillby looks down at the light yellowish wood of the table and back to your eyes. Making full contact that things will get serious.
Taking a seat you do scoot the chair close with its legs facing to where he sits.

"(Y/N). What do you think of me? In your honest opinion, what am I to you?"

"Grillby. You are Grillby. That is not a what, but a who. My only family at first from the start and now I can call so many a family of my own all because of you. Family. My family. My teacher, my guardian, my loved one. There is nothing else I can think of about you."

Moved by your bold and blunt honesty he sees the changes in you. No longer bratty as often nor oblivious and confused. You are clear minded and stronger than before. He is a lucky person to see all of the process himself.

"(Y/N) I don't know what to say. Only asking you about our relationship."

"Relationship?" To hear this term from him is new. It was talked about and questioned by the people you trust. Gazing at the flames you focus on to ease the stress down.

"Yes. Just that I do not know how I am seeing you. I love you of course but not all love is the same." What does he mean? Are you not good enough? Is he sad? Anger? Or disappointed in you.

"Grillby. I can change. I have done it before already to be better. I want to be happy with you and with many."

"No. No, it is not that. You're fine with just the way you are right now. What I meant is a lover in a way."

"Lovers?"

"Do you see us likely becoming lovers or something else."

"I am unsure of what you are saying. I love you just the same none of the less."

Grillby nods still conflicted, but it didn't prevent him to show affection towards you. A light ruffled on the head just enough to not make more tangles on the bedhead. He smiled and the two begins to eat.

For the morning both people already as he brushed your hair even though you insisted. He is aware you can do it on your own, but he wants to have memories of taking care of you to be relished. He remembered the hardships and struggles you were a handful, to begin with. It made the experience with you more cherished for he is so proud to see improvements to your lifestyle and happiness.

Yes, there are episodes of you combating your inner demons from the past and present feelings. Those are the best evidence of change seen as you restrained yourself to never hurt anyone, not self-harm during the episodes.

He thinks through the past actions he has with you. He is like a father-figure to you, but then again it may become something else over time. He will see if so he is still a beacon in your world. Just for how long though?

Strange things happening so sudden at times. How some things just blow up in our faces sometimes. It is just the way some things are the strange wonders of life-changing moments.
