Nada and Mal slowly shifted through the news articles. Most were laminated, others were crumbling. This is what had been in her suitcase? Papers about her past kills. Was it even worth it?
There wasn't much evidence, though. Not enough to do anything about, really.
Mal slowly put down the paper, remembering what she and her ex husband had said last time they talked on the phone.
"Jeff, I really have come to fear the child that was brought into our house."
"Fearing a child is nonsense. It should be the other way around."
"Will you come back for a little while? Please?"
"Kale does want to see his sister...." Jeff said, obviously talking to himself.
"Please? I'll even fix up the guest room. Besides, your sister's funeral will be soon and we can all ride together." Mal added.
"I'll be there tomorrow at noon."
"Okay, but I work. So I might not be here."
They both hung up simultaneously. This was going to be a long while. Mal knew that instantly.
And she still knew it. She still knew shit could hit the fan easily.
Nada pulled out a small, sparkly green booklet. It had a lock on it. She said it looked like a diary.
"Journal. Sabine calls them journals." Mal replied.
Nada nodded, looking at Kyle. "You know how to break into these?"
"No. How?"
She smiled, playing with her braid. "With a bobby pin." She pulled out the bobby pin she had used before, showing Kyle. "You put it in the bottom and twist." There was a click and the lock fell off.
Nada skimmed through it and found only a couple pages were written in. One was about Nada. Another was about Ashton. Nothing else. She threw the book at the wall behind her mother and held back a scream.
Kyle asked what was wrong, holding onto her shoulders.
"There's nothing. Nothing we can use against her." Nada pushed Kyle away and stood up.
Mal sat there, looking at the floor, then suddenly, an idea sprung into her head. "The body. If we call nine-one-one-"
"No." Nada cut in. "No police, remember?"
"She's not home." Mal replied, grabbing her phone. "But we know where she is."
--
Sabine was curled into Ashton. She trailed one finger up his side, and felt him shiver. She looked up to him and he kissed her. Long and sweet.
She pulled the bulky blanket up over them. He took her hand, lacing his fingers in her's. He kissed her neck, and she felt her heart rate slightly increase. She shuddered and let a breath escape her lips.
"So, did I succeed?" Ashton asked, taking his hand from her's he brushed her hair from her face.
She smiled, half wanting to nod, but also not wanting him to have. She was so confused about herself at this rate. Did she like girls? She had thought she did since she was really young. But maybe it was only a phase? A sinful phase, her first dad would have said. She couldn't even remember most of her past families.
Sabine had a weird feeling in her stomach. "I've got to go." She sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed, not even caring that she wasn't dressed yet.
