Logan's POV

“I promise that after today, we are going to spend so much time together,” Mae swears to me as she’s putting on some eyeliner. How she’s putting on makeup and talking to me at the same time is a miracle because I would never be able to do that.

“Mae, it’s totally fine,” I assure her. “We’ve spent the past four days glued to each other’s side. I promise that I won’t have separation anxiety over just one day.”

“I mean, you can come with us if you want,” She continues. “I know that I already asked you but I’m going to ask you again. It’s not going to be just me and Landon. It’s going to be a group of friends and I think you’d have fun.”

“Really, I’m okay,” I tell her, sitting on the edge of her bed. “But when you have your first kiss with Landon, I want to be the first one to hear about it.”

“That won’t happen tonight,” She sighs, teasingly rolling her eyes. “Or any night, actually. Landon is a really nice guy but we’re just friends.”

“But you like him,” I remind her.

“Yes,” She sighs again, moving to decorate her next eye in makeup. “But I don’t think he likes me like that. I don’t know, it’s complicated.”

“It’s not that complicated,” I shrug. “Anyway, I’ll be patient. I’ll be here if you need anything, just text me or something.”

“Yeah, I will,” She confirms. “Miles is out too and Mom and Dad are still working so you have the house to yourself until I get home- or Miles, I don’t know when he’s coming home. If he gets here before me though, please do not hang out with him, okay?”

“Why not?” I wonder with raised eyebrows.

“Because it’s weird,” She tells me. “You two hanging out when I’m not there.”

“Do you think that we conspire against you or something? Mae, we’re kind of friends a little bit.”

“Like I’m ‘just friends’ with Landon?” She questions me, turning to look at me with impeccably raised eyebrows after her makeup is done.

“No. We’re only kind of friends and I’m not really into him like that,” I tell my best friend although I’m not sure how true that is. I’m not saying that I want to go out with Miles or anything, I’m just saying that he’s a really nice guy who is also really cute and the thought of messing around with him isn’t completely repulsive.

“Just be careful,” She warns me as she picks up her purse and starts walking towards the door of her bedroom. “If something happens between you two and it ends badly, I just don’t want it to affect our summer or anything.”

“Nothing like that is going to happen,” I tell her again. And again, I’m not sure how much truth that statement holds but I don’t want to get her paranoid about something that’s only in my head or anything.

We walk downstairs together and I say goodbye to Mae at the front door because she has to pick up some of her friends and then she’s going to meet Landon and his friends wherever it is that they’re going to hang out. It’s not that I don’t want to go hang out with Mae and her new friends, it’s just that I can be very pushy when I think that two people like each other but aren’t doing anything about it. Mae is a really shy girl though, and I don’t want to embarrass her or anything, which I would probably do.

When she’s gone and I’m officially home alone, I go back upstairs into my room and check my phone for any calls from my parents. There are none, so I decide to go for a jog down the beach since it’s been a while since I’ve worked out and I’m beginning to feel like a bucket of potatoes. I get dressed in a lime green sports bra, black Nike boy shorts that are pretty tight and short but considering the fact that I’ll be on a beach where most people are wearing bikinis and everything, I don’t feel bad about wearing them, and then I cover my sports bra with a gray cropped t-shirt that cuts off right above my belly button. After tying up my pink and silver running shoes, I strap my phone to my arm with one of those bands for people to put their phone on their arm while they run and then I stretch for a little bit before setting off down the beach.
