The bunker was quiet. Dean was out with Benny and Cas was asleep. That was a strange thought. Cas had never needed sleep before, but he was human now. The fall had really taken it's toll on him. He'd been human for a month and yet the concept was still so foreign to everyone. Dean and Sam tried to be there for Cas as much as possible, but Sam found it harder on him. He'd been in love with Cas for a long time. He'd never said anything of course, because he was an angel. Who falls in love with an angel? Well Sam did. What Sam didn't know was Cas had taken a special interest in Sam. Sure he and Dean had that 'profound bond' thing. But it was strictly spiritual. Sam was sure Dean had a thing for Benny anyway. But when Cas had admitted to feeling things for the youngest Winchester, Sam had been shocked. He'd just gotten back with the brothers after the fall. He was scared and alone and when he saw Sam he'd clung to the hunter like his life depended on it.

"Cas?" Dean's worried tone caused Sam looked up and see the angel in front of them. He looked worn and so very...human.

"Sam, Dean," Cas stepped towards the brothers.

Dean placed a hand on the angel's shoulder. "You look like you could use some fresh clothes," Dean released Cas and disappeared down the hall.

"Cas," Sam's voice was barely above a whisper. He hated to see the angel like this.

"Sam," Cas' tone was raw and broken. Sam went in for a hug and Cas buried his head into Sam's chest.

"He took everything from me, my grace, my wings," Cas' gave a tearless sob.

"I'm so sorry, I should have been there," Sam pressed his cheek to Cas' damp hair.

"You have nothing to apologize for," Cas assured him.

"What can I do?" Sam asked. He never felt so helpless.

"Don't let me go," Cas begged.

"Never," Sam agreed holding the angel in his arms tighter.

The memory was shaken from Sam's thoughts as a loud shout sounded from deep in the bunker.

"Cas," Sam whispered worriedly, jumping to his feet. The book he was holding fell to the table roughly.

Sam rushed to his room where Cas had been staying.

"Cas?" Sam barged into the room to see the fallen angel sitting up with wide eyes and sweat beads glistening his forehead.

"Sam," Cas panted.

"What's wrong?" Sam looked around as if to spot the reason for Cas' distress.

"I think...I think I had a bad dream," Cas frowned down at the sheets tangled around his legs.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Sam asked sitting on the edge of the bed and wrapping his arm around Cas.

"They were sawing my wings off slowly, painfully. I was begging them to stop, but..." Cas' voice waivered.

"Shhh, it's okay, you're safe, they can't hurt you," Sam pulled Cas in close.

Cas leaned his cheek on Sam's chest and let the man he loved hold him.

"I'm so sorry you have to go through this, Cas," Sam spoke quietly.

"I'm just glad I'm not alone," Cas sighed.

Sam pressed his lips to the top of Cas' head as he held him. He would never let Cas be alone again. And he would never let anyone hurt him again. He was suddenly riddled with the guilt that he hadn't protected him before.

"I'm so sorry I didn't protect you," Sam's voice was sad and broken.

Cas pulled away so that his eyes could meet Sam's, "I wasn't supposed to need protecting. I am...I was an angel." Cas corrected himself, "I shouldn't have needed your protection."

Sam looked down at Cas with a fondness in his eyes, "I love you," Sam smiled, brushing a strand of damp hair off Cas' forehead.

"I love you too, Sam," Cas smiled back, "Will you stay with me?" Cas asked then his smile fading to worry.

"Of course," Sam nodded sliding under the covers and next to the fallen angel.

Cas curled himself into Sam who held him close.

"Please, don't ever let go," Cas whispered in a sleep deprived tone.

Sam gripped Cas just a little tighter, "Never."
