Dean watched fondly as Cas read from the lore book he had laid out in front of him. The angel was trying to decipher between two different versions of the same story and which he thought applied to their latest monster.
Cas was essentially arguing with the book, "Now you just said that silver might kill it on the last page, but now here it says that silver will likely only hurt it. What am I missing here?"
Dean smiled at the angel. He enjoyed watching Cas work through mundane things. It was funny to Dean. Cas was older than he could even imagine and yet here he was reading from a book in a small underground bunker in the middle of Kansas. Cas could be anywhere in the world doing anything he wanted and yet the angel chose to be here with him and Sam helping them do research on some random monster.
"Dean are you listening?" Cas huffed looking at the hunter.
"Yeah, something about silver?" Dean said dropping his eyes to his own book. He hadn't been paying attention.
"No, I said, they're in the same family as shapeshifters but it seems silver only slows them down. Now it also says that-"
Cas was cut off by a loud bang from the kitchen. Sam was in his room so what the hell had made that noise?
Dean grabbed the gun holstered under the table and carefully made his way to the kitchen.
"What the?" A voice grumbled from the room.
Dean aimed his gun as he came around the corner. He faltered for a moment at the sight in front of him. It was...himself.
"What the hell?" Dean swore down at the man that looked exactly like him sprawled on his kitchen floor.
"Aw, Damn it," The guy on the floor huffed as he pulled himself to his feet.
"Who the hell are you?" Dean demanded his gun still pointed at the intruder.
"I'm you, dumbass what does it look like?" The other Dean snapped.
"You're from a different time, what year are you from?" Cas said cocking his head slightly.
"Twenty eighteen," The other Dean answered. He was looking at Cas as if he was seeing him for the first time in a while.
"You look the same, but you're not," Cas took a step towards future Dean.
"Whoa, hold on, Cas," Dean put a hand out.
"It's just you, Dean," Cas rolled his eyes, ignoring the hunter.
"You look the same too," Future Dean looked at Cas with a fond smile.
"How? No scratch that, why are you here?" Dean asked his future self.
"Rowena and I got into it. Guess she thought it'd be funny," Future Dean huffed.
"Rowena?" Dean frowned. Who the hell was Rowena?
"The witch, Rowena," Future Dean answered as if it was obvious, "She was helping with a spell and I got impatient. We got into it, like we tend to and-"
"I'm sorry, did you say helping? You're working with a witch?" Dean blinked at himself.
"What year is this?" Future Dean asked, looking around the kitchen as if it might give him some clue.
"Two thousand thirteen," Dean answered.
"Right, well that explains..." Future Dean trailed off as he gestured between Cas and his past self.
"Explains what?" Dean frowned as Cas cocked his head again.
"Nothing, nevermind," Future Dean shook his head. He knew better than to get into it with himself about Cas.
