Sam slid into the seat across from Gabriel of the coffee shop they frequented.
His best friend looked up from the cinnamon bun he'd ordered and smiled, "Heya Sammy,"
Sam smiled back. He and Gabe had been friends since freshmen year of highschool, now they were both starting their first year of college. Sam had been thankful when they both got into Stanford. He was going into Law school and Gabriel was going into architectural design. They got an apartment together just off campus. Sam couldn't have imagined starting this new phase of his life without his best friend with him. The two had been inseparable since the moment they met. It had been in Gym class, Sam was short, really short, and Gabriel had defended him when Brady Evan had started teasing Sam. However, the next year Sam hit a growth spurt and became the tallest in their class. Now he stood at a whopping six foot, four inches.
"I see you judging my delicious treat," Gabriel laughed around a bite of his overly sweet pastry. Gabriel had always had a major sweet tooth. He was the complete opposite of Sam in that regard. Actually, he was the complete opposite of Sam in most regards. Sam was a giant, where Gabriel didn't even hit five-nine. Gabriel was outgoing, loud, the trickster type. Sam was quieter, more reserved. Gabriel had a lot of friends, Sam only had Gabe. Gabriel grew up with a huge family. Sam grew up with his dad and brother, his dad was gone a lot, so he was practically raised by his brother. Despite their differences, they were great friends. They were each other's rocks when things got hard. When Sam came out a bi, his dad didn't take it well, but Gabriel was there for him. When Gabriel's mother passed away from cancer, Sam stepped up. When Sam was dumped by his first boyfriend, Gabriel was there to pick up the pieces. When Gabriel totaled his car, Sam drove him anywhere he needed to go. Neither one expected anything from the other, but they were always there. Perhaps that was why Sam had found himself head over heels for the guy. He'd realized it at the start of senior year. Gabriel got a boyfriend. He realized over summer that girls just weren't doing it for him, so he tested the waters with some guy he met and well, as it turned out Gabriel was gay. So, when Gabriel started dating Benny Lafitte, Sam found himself jealous. Sam had never been jealous of the many girls Gabriel had dated over the years, but as soon as Gabe and Benny got together, Sam was pissed. He had never had a problem with Benny before, in fact he'd rather liked the guy. He was similar to Sam, in the sense that he was the quiet type. He had stunning blue eyes, and southern accent that could melt anyone. He was great for Gabriel, but Sam couldn't bring himself to like the guy, not when he was touching and kissing Gabe in the way Sam wanted to be.
Gabriel and Benny broke up at the end of senior year. Benny was moving to Chicago, and Gabriel was going to Stanford with Sam. Sam had been beyond thrilled, but Gabriel took it hard. He was torn up over it for weeks. Sam stepped in though, just like he always did, but this time, he found himself more guarded. He limited the time he spent alone with Gabe, for fear of doing something he'd regret and ruining their friendship. Losing Gabriel wasn't an option, no matter how much he loved his best friend, and no matter how much it hurt.
"You alright there, Sam?" Gabriel frowned. He'd finished his cinnamon bun and was looking at Sam with concerned gold eyes. Sam had always thought Gabriel had unique eyes, they were truly gold in color with hints of green and amber. Sam often thought of them as the sun shining through a glass of whiskey.
"I'm fine," Sam lied. He wasn't fine. He had met up with Gabriel to suggest getting a third roommate. Not because they needed one, but because Sam couldn't live with Gabriel alone. It was too tempting. He thought if there was a third party involved that he might be less inclined to kiss his best friend.
"I've barely seen you all week, you text me saying to meet you here and you've barely said two words. I know you better than that," Gabriel frowned sitting back in his seat.
"Uh, I was thinking, we have an extra room in the apartment, what if we got another roommate?" Sam asked. It was true he'd hardly seen Gabriel since they got the apartment, because he'd been avoiding him.
"What?" Gabriel looked taken aback. Clearly, he'd not been expecting that.
"You know, just to have a third person to split the rent with," Sam shrugged.
Gabriel narrowed his eyes, "We get a monthly check for living costs from the school."
"Right, yeah, I know, but-"
"Sam, what's this about?" Gabriel huffed, cutting Sam off. He knew better.
"What do you mean?" Sam frowned.
"I know you, Sam, we've been friends for years, you've been avoiding me all week and when you want to talk, we have to meet out. Did I do something?" Gabriel's eyes were full of concern and it made Sam's chest ache. Gabriel didn't deserve this.
"No, you didn't do anything," Sam sighed dropping his eyes to his lap. What could he possibly say? Hey, I think I'm in love with you.
"Are you worried that now that I know I'm gay and we're living together I'm gonna make a move?" Gabe asked, his tone laced with hurt.
"No, no, of course not, I know you wouldn't do that," Sam shook his head, "I just..." Sam trailed off. He didn't want to tell Gabriel, but he couldn't lie either.
"Dean told you, didn't he?" Gabriel asked, suddenly looking very uncomfortable.
"Huh?" Sam tilted his head in confusion.
"I didn't mean to tell him, I just needed to tell someone, and he's your brother, he knew how you'd react and he swore not to tell you. I didn't mean to, you're just so great. You're beautiful and smart, and you're my best friend, how could I not love you?" Gabriel rattled quickly.
Sam's jaw dropped.
"I swear I'd never make a move, I don't want things to change. Please, you're too important to me. I can't lose you. If you want to get a third roommate, we can. If you think you'll be more comfortable-"
"Gabe, stop," Sam reached out and placed a hand on Gabriel's, which was gripping his coffee a little too tight.
"I'm so sorry, Sam," Gabriel bowed his head in shame.
"Why are you sorry?" Sam frowned. Could Gabriel really have feelings for him? This had to be a dream.
"Because, I'm in love with you," Gabriel said it like it was crime he'd committed.
A warm feeling washed over Sam. Relief maybe?
"Gabriel," Sam grinned, unable to control himself, "I've been avoiding you because I love you and I was afraid you'd hate me."
Gabriel sighed with relief, "You're kidding," He laughed.
"You told Dean you loved me?" Sam asked then with a smirk.
"I was nervous about moving in together," Gabriel shrugged.
"How long?" Sam tilted his head.
Gabriel dropped his eyes, "Last summer, before senior year, I started to notice things about you. Like your smile, and you shirtless... You're the reason I started dating Benny. I needed to keep my feelings for you in check. It helped until he had to leave. He was great, but he wasn't you," Gabriel glanced up at Sam, "What about you?"
"When you started dating Benny, I realized it. Man I hated him. I had no reason to other than he had you," Sam shrugged. He realized his hand was still holding onto Gabriel's.
At that moment, Gabriel leaned over the table and placed his lips on Sam's. It startled Sam at first, but the feeling that spread through him told him this was right. Gabe was right.
"You still want that third roommate?" Gabriel smirked when he pulled back.
"Definitely not," Sam said before pulling Gabriel back in for another kiss. This was what he wanted, this is all he wanted.
