"Hello?"

"Hi Ryland."

"Why are you calling me?"

"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry, and i have bad news that i thought you should know."

"Ok, let's start with the bad news." I looked at Shane, who was also hearing the call. He looked nervous, almost as nervous as i felt.

"Ryland, your father passed away."

Everything in that moment froze. Shane held me tighter. I held back tears and said, 

"Thank you for telling me."

"Your welcome. Are you ok?"

"No mom, I'm not ok. I have to go. I'll call back later." I said, lying through my teeth. 

"Ok sweetie, I'll be here." 

And with that i hung up. Everything as still frozen. Shane held me while a single tear rolled down my cheek. I don't know how to feel. I just sat there, numb. I don't know if I'm sad, mad, happy, or maybe just numb. Maybe someday the feeling on this whole thing will come back. But that day is not today.

Ryland has been not ok since his dad died. He doesn't know how to feel. His mom didn't even ask how he was when they talked again later that night. His dad treated him terribly, he abused him, verbally and physically. He kicked him out just because of his sexuality. They didn't care that he was in the hospital. 

"Ry?" 

"Yes?" He said sadly,

"Can we talk?"

"Shane are you breaking up with me?" He said, tears welling up in his eyes.

"No, no, no. Baby I would never." He seemed to relax as i held his hands and kissed him.

"I need to talk about you. How do you feel?"

"Shane I don't even know how i feel. I just feel numb. I'm not sad, but I'm not happy." He said starting to cry softly.

"Baby..." I said as i cupped my hands around his face, wiping his tears with my thumbs.

"Is there anything i can do?" I asked. I hate seeing him like this.

"I don't think so, I think this is something only time can heal."

"I love you." I said kissing him on the cheek.

"I love you too." He said wrapping his arms around my neck.
