- i think phoenix and bay were fighting? i forget
- kahoot collapsed outside of Mr. Adams' house, so that's where I left off

"Kahoot!"

"I'm fine, I'm fine!" Kahoot groans from the ground.

You brush his soft hair back from his forehead. His eyes are screwed shut, and his lips are pursed into a tight line. He's like a statue, tense and unmoving in your arms. After a moment, you can feel him relax against you, melting into your side with a sigh.

"What happened? Are you okay?" asks Bay.

"Yeah, yeah...my head just hurts sometimes. No big deal." Kahoot gets up, partially using you as a crutch. He brushes his pants clean and looks around. "I'm fine now."

During all this, Toohak just watches from the window. He still hasn't answered Bay's question to hang out with you guys. Suddenly, there's a thud in the background, coming from deep inside the house, and he whips around.

"Uh- I can't go, I'm really busy, actually."

A crash.

"Maybe another time, bye!"

Toohak slams the window down with a click and swishes the blinds shut. You can still hear his footsteps echoing inside, distancing themselves further and further away, vibrating through the house.

"Well that was weird," Bay points out, looking worriedly between the window and Kahoot.

"This whole thing is weird," you mumble.

The three of you decide to hang out at Kahoot's house until lunch, then head back to school for your afternoon classes. As the three of you trek away, Toohak waits, peering through the window until you're gone from sight. Finally.

Toohak makes his way down the rotting wooden staircase into the basement. The musty air is still present, left over from the annual floods that leads to slimy concrete and the pungent smell.

"You okay over there?"

A little girl is curled up in corner, head lifting at the sound of his voice. Her lips stay sealed, tiny body trembling. Salty tears trickle past her mouth and down her chin. He sighs, internally rolling his eyes at his father. Who kidnaps a 5 year old on a whim, anyway?

"...this is ridiculous," Toohak mumbles to himself. He walks a couple paces closer and extends his hand to the kid. "I'm taking you home. Let's go."

Camille's eyes go wide. Sensing the oncoming freakout, Toohak quickly backtracks, raising his hands and giving a reassuring smile.

"It's okay! It's okay, I'm a good guy. I'm...with the police. This is a rescue."

The lie seems to work. Camille starts to cry harder. She hesitantly gets up to follow Toohak, letting him slip his hand into hers, guiding them from the damp basement to outside, where Toohak rushes them into a car. Toohak drives them to a couple buildings down from the police station. He puts the car in park and turns around in his seat.

"You see that building made of bricks?" Toohak asks, pointing out the window. "Just walk in there and they'll bring you home, okay?"

She nods. Toohak gets out to open the door for her. He gets back in and watches her in his review mirror, making sure she makes it. Once she's made it inside, he starts the car.
