I sat on my front porch, gazing up at a sky full of stars. My breath hitched in my throat as I admired the beauty surrounding me. The full moon was slowly ascending and small twinkling lights scattered around it. The moon cast a silvery light across the tree tops around me and everything had a cool, crisp glow.

The cold fresh air filled my lungs, swooping through my nose and mouth and pouring into my core. The village was silent except for a distant car and some chatter from people making their way to the clearing.

The quiet was interrupted when the high-pitched ringing of my phone sliced through the air. I swiped the green button and pressed it firmly to my ear. "Happy full moon honey," my fathers voice boomed.

"Happy full moon dad." A smile graced my face at his call, I was just happy to know he was safe.

"Stay safe, Ella. I love you."

"I love you too dad."

He abruptly ended the call and I was left holding my phone, still to my ear, waiting for him to call back.

"Are you ok?" Zach's velvety voice asked from behind me. I spun to see his large figure in the doorway, the moonlight casting shadows across his face. His eyes glistened as they reflected the light and they held the excitement and thrill of the full moon. His eyebrows were relaxed over his beautiful eyes and his lips were in a half smile.

"Yeah. Are you ready?"

He nodded before locking the front door and taking my hand in his. Our fingers interlocked and I felt completely peaceful and calm. All the worry and anxiety from yesterday had melted away and all I could focus on was my wolf.

We steadily strolled up to the clearing, hand in hand. As we neared it, members of the pack scattered up the hill, also making their way, so after a comforting squeeze, Zach dropped my hand.

We stood in the clearing together until the last member arrived and then the whole pack silenced. We watched as the moon edged into its apex and immediately, people began to turn. I smiled at Zach and nodded as I felt the shift begin. My eyes blazed the glowing yellow and my fangs pushed through my gums.

In front of me, I watched as Zach's eyes flickered a mustard yellow, the moonlight reflecting off of them. Two long, pointed fangs forced through his gums while long talons dragged out his finger nails. We both placed our hands and knees on the floor and waited.

Beside me, the caramel coloured fur coated the large wolf. His body being much larger and bulkier than mine. My own wolf finally took over and we stood, waiting for the howl. I dug my claws into the ground, raking through the dirt as an anchor. The thrill of the full moon caused my wolf to be even more impatient.

Soon enough, every shift had occurred and around me grey, brown and black wolves stood, poised. Finally Beta Jackson let out a roaring howl before the pack scattered. Wolves ran, pounced and sprung across the clearing, vanishing into the woods.

Zach and I launched into the woods, desperate to run, and took off up the mountain. We sprinted up to the peak at full speed before stopping for a few minutes. We growled and snarled at each other playfully and soon we were both on our back legs, front paws pressed together and our jaws interlocked in a playful fight.

We tackled and bit and clawed at each other, only rough enough to nip each others fur. Eventually we continued down the side of the mountain towards the secluded creek. We took it in turns to chase each other, weaving in and out of the trees and hurtling through overgrown brambles.

We raced across open fields and pushed through long grass and matted shrubbery. Finally we weren't far from our creek when I heard a booming shot before I felt a small stinging pain shoot through my front leg.

I tumbled instantly to the ground and let out a sharp whimper. Beside me I could hear groaning and grunting, making it clear Zach was also injured. The wails of my wolf were high-pitched and echoed through the woods.

My breathing became harsh and ragged, leaving me panting between cries. My entire body trembled as an intense burning pain pulsed in my thigh. I knew I had been shot, but the pain slowly spread.

Soon, my entire body was burning up and I felt my head begin to spin. My surroundings became a blur as I screamed at the agony. My leg throbbed and my abdomen sizzled from the heat. Sweat poured from my body as I was thrust into darkness.

My head was thumping and my leg ached as I came to. My fur was drenched in sweat and everything was blurry. I could see metal bars surrounding me as I stumbled to my feet. The moon was still high in the sky and I could see I was moving. The light shone behind me where Zach lay, his eyes fluttered open and then slammed shut again a few times.

I could see a blur of dirty blond fur as my vision once again became fuzzy. My breathing was quick and sharp and my entire body was still burning in pain. I collapsed back onto the floor and pushed up against Zach fur, burying my nose in his neck as my heavy eyes rolled back into my head.
