I didn’t know what to do with the rest of the day. It was Saturday afternoon and I walked through the streets. I had no clue where I should go, but I knew that I didn’t want to be home.
I was still trying to figure out what just had happened. Have I been dreaming? Hallucinating?
I didn’t know.
As I walked I looked down all the time, so I didn’t see the person walking towards me until I ran into him.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sor-“ I looked up. “Leo? What are you doing here?” I asked confused.
He smiled and pointed at the house entrance right next to us. “I’m living here. And you? What are you doing here?”
“Well, honestly I’m lost, but basically I’m just trying to get as far away from home as possible.”
“May I know why?” He shot me a worried look.
“May I tell you later?”
“Sure.” He took a deep breath and pointed at the house again. “Do you wanna come in?”
I nodded and examined him. “Are you shivering?”
“I don’t – It’s cold.”
“It is.” I said.
For a moment we were just standing in front of each other. I waited for him to move, to walk to the door and open it, but all he did was looking into my eyes. I wondered what he was thinking.
“Are you going to let me in?” I asked to break the silence.
“Of… Of course.” He said and took his key out of his pocket and opened the door.
We went inside and put off our jackets and shoes.
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the living room. “Come.”
His parents were sitting at the table and they looked at us.
“Mom, Dad, this is Aiden. He’s my – a very good friend.” Leonard introduced me.
“Hello, Mrs and Mr Morris.” I said.
Mrs Morris laughed. “Please, it’s Faye.” She stood up and gave me her hand. Then she looked at her husband. “And Damien.”
He nodded. “It’s always nice to meet friends of our son.”
Mrs Morris grabbed my hand again. “Do you want some coffee? Something to eat?”
“Erm, erm, coffee, please.” I said.
“Okay.” She smiled. “Have a seat.”
“Mom, what about going to my room?” Leonard asked.
“Are you ashamed of us?” Mr Morris asked.
“That’s not it. You’re friendly and all, but I’d rather spend the time with my friend alone.” Leonard explained.
“It’s okay.” Said his mom. “Let him, Damien.” She handed us two cups and a can of coffee. “ Here.”
“Thanks, mom.”
“I like your parents.” I said after I had emptied my first cup.
We were leaning against the wall and sat at the ground. On the opposite wall was a huge mirror.
“They’re nice.” He confirmed. “But for now, I want time with you. A… Alone.”
I laid my head on his shoulder. “I like that.” I whispered in this ear. He was shivering again, and I felt this tingling again. Butterflies, I thought.
“Me too. I like you very much. You’re the best friend I ever had. Technically it is bullshit to say that I only like you. I love you… As a fri… Friend of course. I… I… -“
“I love you too.” I said. He didn’t know how true that was. He didn’t know, that my heart was beating just for him. But he had a boyfriend, and was way out of my league. I didn’t even stand a chance. I should be happy to be friends with my crush at least.
“Are you fine with me telling it like it is?” he asked.
“Sure. Everything else doesn’t describe it good enough.”
He nodded.
“As long as your boyfriend doesn’t get jealous.” I laughed softly.
“He… He won’t be.” He turned his head away and whispered something to himself I couldn’t understand.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.” He said quickly. “I said nothing.”
“Okay.” I put my arms around him and he laid his around my shoulders and pulled me near.
Butterflies in my stomach. I sighed and smiled. For me this was just perfect. My eyes were closed.
With every breath I smelled him and I heard his heart beat. That was making me happy and made me feel relaxed, and nervous and excited at the same time.
Maybe that’s how falling in love feels.
