-Steve-
Felicia knew my secret.
A secret that no one else knew, with the exception of my beloved parents.
I didn't know whether to be angry, to be relieved, or to be utterly disappointed in myself.
She said she wouldn't tell anyone. She looked me in the eyes and promised me that. Her eyes were honest, and I knew she meant what she said.
I haven't played the violin in a long, long time. And boy, did it feel good to be playing it once again. I felt calm and serene. And the best part? To open my eyes and see Felicia smiling at me.
We'd walked back to our rooms. I can see her scribbling furiously in her book that I once 'borrowed'. She didn't seem mad, though. In fact, she had this cute silly grin on her face, and she erupted into giggles ever so often.
I had a hunch on what she was writing about.
I walked into her room like it was nobody's business. I plonked down on her bed. No reaction.
I called out to her. "Hey, Felicia,"
"Hmm?" was all she replied, without even glancing at me.
"If you're struggling on what to write about me, I'd suggest - " I deliberately made my voice all high and shrill.
" 'Dear Diary,
Remember I told you I met this really hot guy? I realised he plays the violin today! That is so cool! I like this guy a lot. I wish he will like me too.
Felicia!' "
Felicia scrunched up her face, desperately trying to control her laughter. Finally she choked out, "Acck-ahemm... what did you just say? You expect me to write that down? This isn't my diary, for goodness sake."
I shrugged. "It wouldn't kill to write that down anyway," I said.
Felicia merely laughed and shook her head. She continued doing whatever-the-heck-she-was-doing and ignored my presence again.
"Hey Cinderella," I said.
"What is it this time, Prince Charming?" she asked patiently.
"Why aren't you asking?" I asked apprehensively.
"About what?" she asked.
"You know... about the violin..." I hesitated.
She stopped scribbling. She got up and sat next to me on the bed. She put her head on my shoulder. Good. I like it this way.
"I won't ask if you don't wanna tell me," she said quietly.
I looked at her in surprise. She smiled weakly at me. "If it's something that you can't even let Damien know, then I don't wanna force you to say," she said.
"You won't tell anyone, will you?" I looked straight into her sapphire blue eyes that reminded me of an ocean sparkling in the sunlight.
She nodded. "Cross my heart and hope to die."
I took a deep breath. "When I was young, I was a scrawny, weak kid. Everyone used to bully me," I admitted. Felicia gazed at me in surprise. I wouldn't blame her. No one could guess that I was a scarecrow when I was young.
"I never knew how to stand up for myself. I'd just let them bully me," i sighed.
"Until I met him."
Felicia looked at me with a questioning glance. She beckoned me to carry on.
"He was my teacher. He taught Math, but his passion was in Music. He told me, that one day, I'd grow bigger and stronger than all of them. Then I could beat the crap out of them." I smiled, thinking how easily I could thrash those people if they met me now.
"He infected me with his love for music. He loved all instruments, but he preferred the violin. He taught me how to play the violin. He showed me how music could calm you down, no matter how you're feeling."
I kept silent for a bit, and let his face flow freely into mine again. If I tried hard enough, I can still remember him showing me how to play the violin for the first time.
Felicia placed her hand on mine. "Go on," she prompted.
I looked at her face. I knew she wouldn't tell anyone else, but I couldn't say the rest. I wasn't ready to. I shook my head. "I'll tell you when I'm ready, alright?" I said.
Felicia smiled and patted my hand. "It's okay. If you ever need a listening ear, I'll always be here for you," she assured me gently and didn't probe any further.
My heart started beating at a ridiculously fast speed. That smile. How I loved that smile. How I wished she could smile like that forever.
"Okay," I said.
She stood up to go, but I pulled her back. She understood immediately and stayed where she was. I wrapped my arms around her waist but she didn't struggle or react to it. Instead, she closed her eyes and rested her head on my shoulder.
We stayed like that, enjoying each other's companionship. Felicia broke the silence first.
"Hey Steve," she said.
"Yeah?" I drawled, pulling her closer to me.
"You haven't eaten yet, have you?" she asked.
I checked my phone, cause I'm too cool for a watch. It said "6.26 p.m."
"Now that you mention it, I'm starving. Go and get ready and we'll go out for dinner. I don't suppose Damien made an appointment with you already?" I asked.
Felicia shook her head bitterly, much to my relief. "He hasn't really been asking me out recently." I could hear the disappointment in her voice.
"Well then, what are you waiting for? You'll come and eat dinner with me, right?" I asked.
"I've nothing better to do anyway," she grinned at me.
