We walked to Steve's car when I suddenly blurted out, "Steve, I don't want to go back yet."
He nodded, understanding at once. "Do you wanna go somewhere in particular?" he asked.
I shook my head. "No. I just want to stay out for a while," I said.
He grinned at me. "I know the perfect place to bring you," he winked mysteriously at me.
"Fasten your seatbelt," was all he said before he took off at a ridiculously high speed again.
"What is wrong with you?! Jeez, slow down!" I shouted.
He shook his head. "Sorry, no can do, Cinderella. I like it fast and furious," he said. "Don't worry, I'll keep you safe," he said, concentrating on the road.
I shut my eyes tightly, not daring to see the view in front of me. Steve drove like a maniac. I made a mental note not to let him drive anymore.
"We're here," Steve's voice made my eyes open wide. We were at a park. I didn't see what was so special about it. He took my hand and gently led me out of a car.
We walked on and on, and my feet were aching. I had no idea where we were going. "Steve, where are you taking me?" I asked for the billionth time.
"You'll see," he said with a sparkle in his enchanting green eyes.
I groaned. "You've been saying that for the past 20 minutes," I said.
He merely let out a low chuckle and kept walking.
A few minutes later, Steve said to me breathlessly, "We've reached."
I observed my surroundings. There was a stream that flowed down the path, and lemon trees that gave out a beautiful fragrance. The night sky was illuminated with thousands of twinkling stars. I gazed breathlessly at this scene, intoxicated with the beauty of Nature. Beside me, Steve closed his eyes and lay on the grass. I followed suit and lay down next to him.
"What do you think? Beautiful, isn't it?" he murmured.
I breathed in deeply, enjoying the scent of lemons. "Yes," I whispered. "The most beautiful thing I ever saw."
We lay there in silence, hearing the flow of water from the stream.
I broke the silence. "When did you discover this place?" I asked.
Steve kept his eyes shut, keeping silent for a few moments. "He took me here," he mumbled.
"Who?" I turned to face him. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer to his warm, muscular body. I tried not to care. Tried. I was more curious in that mysterious person.
"Him." Steve repeated, opening his eyes. His green eyes had a hint of sadness in it. "The one who taught me how to play the violin."
He wanted to say more, but I put a finger to his lips. I sensed that he wasn't ready yet. "Don't tell me now. It's okay," I whispered.
He closed his eyes again, nodding. His arms was still around my waist. Awkward. I tried to remove his arms gently, but he clung on tighter.
"Don't," he pleaded. "Just for a while," he begged. I relented. Uncertainly, I placed my arms around his neck, feeling the warmth of his breath against my forehead. I could feel my heartbeat rising. Thump... thump...
If my heart was a car, it would have broken the speed limit ages ago.
Even though my heart is beating madly now, I don't think I've ever been so comfortable before. In fact I think I can just drop off and sleep now.
A few minutes later, Steve loosens his grip and stands up. He held out a hand and pulled me up too. "Sorry about just now," he said.
I smiled. "It's okay. I meant it when I said I'll always be here for you," I reassured.
He smiled shyly. "Wanna go back now?" he asked.
"Provided you don't drive like a madman. I wonder how you got your license."
"I can't promise you that, Cinderella. But I can promise you one thing."
"What?"
"I'll protect you."
