Footsteps
The middle of night
Heavy footsteps behind me
Walking home alone
Whispers from nowhere
Crushed dead leaves on the pavement
Rustle in the wind
Cold shivers, heartbeat
Racing the droplets of sweat
Upon my forehead
'Don't stop,' I resolve
Gulping the sand in my mouth
'They will go away'
"We shan't be gone, dear,"
The whispers I hear too clear
"We came from your mind"
"Your fear summons us
And we will gladly appear
Don't shy away, child."
I run like the wind
Screams lodged in my burning chest
Scared of my own thoughts
The footsteps still heard
I gasp for air then I turn
Nobody is there
