"Now, be careful around cars and streets. And don't forget to call me when you arrive at your friend's house, okay?"

My mother kissed my head and handed me my lunchbox.

I hummed and waved her goodbye, walking out the door.

I was really excited to have a play date with my friends, Rena and Leah. My mom wanted to accompany me but I refused as I didn't want to bother her. After hours of protesting, I convinced her that I was capable now.

I strolled towards Leah's house to go together with her.

"Leah!"

I heard shuffles coming from the inside.

"Coming!"

She blasted the door open and ran towards me, huffing out of breath.

"You look awful today." I scanned her disoriented state and got worried when I saw her tired face. "What happened?"

We started walking.

"I slept late last night watching cartoons," she yawned and staggered.

"Which cartoon?"

We neared the main streets where cars were zooming back and forth non-stop.

She rubbed her eyes. "Gumball."

"Oh! I love Gumball! I almost watched all of their episodes," I giggled.

"Me, too," she smiled.

We kept on talking and walking, not noticing the light turning red in front of us, and stepped right onto the road, unaware.

"I mean, in that episode-"

Out of the blue, a sports car came rushing towards us and hit Leah in a split second.

It all happened in a very slow motion, my world revolving at the slowest possible pace, but I could only stand there motionless as if I forgot how to even move my limbs. I was frozen still.

When I regained my consciousness, I screamed at the sight before me and dropped to my knees.

She was laying there lifeless and bleeding a lot. It was the first time I have ever seen blood in real life. It was the first time I have ever witnessed someone's death.

I was traumatized and terrified out of my mind. I couldn't do anything but cry. I couldn't let her go just like that. We were going to spend so much time together and grow up together, but she just got into an accident. It wasn't fair.

Other people who witnessed the scene came rushing to our aid. Some people called an ambulance, circling around Leah, and some were calming and soothing me.

After a while, the ambulance came and took Leah away. I cried after her but they didn't let me go with her. Another ambulance pulled up and doctors came out, checked my condition and assured me that I will be fine, giving me a lollipop.

"Do you know your mother's or father's phone number?"

I nodded, hiccuping.

They asked to me to call her and tell her to come pick me up. I was frightened to hear her reaction to all of this.

It was my fault.

If I never protested against my mom, all of these wouldn't have happened.

After two rings, she picked up.

"Honey, did you arrive there already?"

I bit my lips, sobbing a little.

"M-Mom, I'm fine, but Leah got into an accident. A car just drove towards us and hit her," my voice was quivering a lot.

"Oh my go- Lyn! Where are you?!"

"The main street," I wiped my tears.

"I'm coming now. Don't move from there!"

I told the doctors that my mom was coming now and they nodded, entering their vehicle and driving off.

I looked around to see people going off at the driver of that sports car. They were cursing and punching him, and were calling the police.

I couldn't go there. After all, what can a small child like me do?

I noticed a man who stood out more than the others by his appearance. He looked like he was attending someone's funeral. His hair was what caught my attention the most. It was gray.

I walked up to him, my legs still trembling. He looked at me but pretended that I wasn't there.

"Excuse me?" I let out in a shaky voice.

He looked down at me again and widened his eyes when he realized that I was talking to him.

He waved his hand before my eyes and I stared at them.

"There's no way you can see me," he chuckled.

"Why? I can see you." I tilted my head confused.

His eyes almost popped out of their sockets when I said that. He stepped backwards.

"What kind of a demon child-"

"Who are you?" I cut him off, bewildered on why he was so shaken that I could see him.

"Me? I'm a... pizza delivery guy!" He smiled.

"But..." I scanned him from head to toe. "Pizza delivery guys don't wear suits..."

I furrowed my eyebrows.

I shouldn't have talked to him. He seems shady...

"The question is, little girl, how can you see me?"

He kneeled down to my eye level and touched my cheek.

"You are human, so why?" He mumbled to himself.

"Of course I'm human. Aren't you a human, mister?"

He laughed at me. His lips caught my eyes.

"Your lips look like a heart, mister."

He smiled and patted my head.

"For someone who just saw her friend pass away, you are taking all these quite well."

My eyebrows crashed together.

"She's not gonna die!"

He sighed and pulled me into a hug.

"She already did. And she said that she was sorry that she was leaving so soon. She wanted to tell you not to forget about her. She was glad that you were okay," he whispered, rubbing my back.

My tears kept streaming down my face. His every word stabbed me in my chest.

"How do you know that?"

I pulled away and he wiped my eyes.

"I'm like a fairy," he smirked.

Fairy?

I didn't believe it.

"Mister, aren't you a reaper then?"
