It had been a month since Virgil's last regression, and no one saw it coming. But apparently, the other sides also regress. In this case specifically, Patton had regressed. Thomas was having an emotional breakdown, which meant when Logan checked in because Patton hadn't made breakfast, he discovered a very emotionally straining child.
Of course Roman was off adventuring, and Patton was too fussy of a child for Logan to deal with calmly. So, that left Virgil.
Virgil had no complaints, Patton was a cuddly child, and if you thought child Virge was clinging for attention, you've forgotten how touch starved adult Virgil was. Patton was emotional, but Virgil was surprisingly good with kids, and he knew how to calm him down. Pat was also very playful, and Virgil enjoyed coloring and pretending with the very punny 3-year-old. Hell, V even began to call Patton kitten!
Virgil was a good dad, and no one saw that coming, especially considering how much of a teenager he is at heart. He even cooked meals in Patton's place, he cleaned the house and checked in with the others. Maybe it was a miracle, or maybe it was just he had a good recipe for eggs and bacon, but no one was as good as Virgil to replace Pat.
By the time Roman came back to Mindscape, he was utterly shocked to see V hand feeding a baby Patton mac'n cheese, while they watched Winnie The Pooh.
"By God, Virgil, I was gone three days! What happened?"
"Pat regressed."
"And you're just, okay?"
"I guess? What's wrong?"
"I don't know, I just figured taking care of a child would stress you. You look calmer than ever!"
"I like kids," He shrugged.
"Did Logan cook?"
"I did."
"You cook?"
"Yeah? I mean, I had to feed myself before I started eating with you guys."
"And I thought dragon witches were the weirdest part of my day."
Patton and Virgil spent the rest of the day coloring and listening to music. It was all fun and games til the toddler started to cry. Virgil immediately sprung into action, holding the poor thing, while carefully rocking him back and forth. Roman barged in with his sword ready, but only became confused to see Virge calming down Patton and shooing him away. Ro quietly took his leave, and Virgil sat on the bed wiping Patton's eyes. Patton eventually stopped crying, just enough that Virgil asked what upset him, only for Pat to give the weakest reply.
"Wat if I don get big a-gain?"
"Hey now, Kitten. I get small too sometimes, but I always get big again, so will you!"
"Are you sure?"
Virgil thought for a second before putting Pat's cat hood on his head, "Paw-sitive!"
And no one in the entire house had ever heard a child giggle so loud.
