"4,170 kms for Harvard, five and a half hours on a plane, what's waiting for me in college?" That was the first thing I thought instead of looking back when Elle said she did not want me to do it on top the escalators.
The airline counter was packed, a lot of people my age "Do all these people are also going to Harvard?" I tried to calm myself and gave my documents the clerk, she gave me a ticket and I sat down to wait... I started thinking about Elle, *was she home yet?*, but no, she would go to my house, Taco Night is today and maybe she will just come back later ... I hope I can still talk to her when I get to Boston.
The boarding call was quick, my seat was at the window, I looked up at the sky and I began to feel my heart beating a little faster, thinking that Elle would be there, away from me, away from my hugs *ok, it was not the last day of summer vacation, but still ... she was so beautiful, so unprotected and so naive ...* "No, I can not think like this or I'll run out of this airplane. We said that everything would be fine, and so it will be" I repeated this mantra to myself for almost 15 minutes.
The plane finally took off and I started to sleep, the planes always do this to me, and I hate long flights.
I dreamed of Elle, we were together at Harvard in one of the college games, she was even more beautiful than she already is, watching me play, cheering for me, smiling ... she has the most beautiful smile, and then the flight landed on Boston. What?? Already?? This is what I call a good dream, the 5 hours flight I spent sleeping and dreaming about my angel, this had been, by far, the best flight of my entire life.
I got my luggage, two large suitcases, not only with clothes, but some books I had already bought in Los Angeles, some football uniforms and my shoes. The saga began in search of a taxi in which my bags fit ... after about 20 minutes, I got a Uberbag and went to the campus, 10 km from the airport ... in ten minutes or a little more we were already in Cambridge.
Harvard is the dream of thousands of people, I know some who try their whole life get a good grade on SATs with enviable curricula to be accepted, and not always succeeding. In my case, besides always being a good student, I played football and that made scouts pay more attention to me. I was accepted with a good grade and the invitation to play football came next.
The campus is extremely large, the Uber driver stopped in front of my dorm: Weld Hall, five floors of rooms and a basement. The solder is unique in its layout - the floors are long and open and connected by two stairs.
I picked up my bags and walked in, seeing the hall, a common room - TV / home theater - kitchen, vending machines of everything you can imagine, washing machines, clothes warehouse, Yard office if your card stopped working , a panel for hanging posters, and Security in case you lock yourself out of your room *I was not planning to do it*.
My room number was 273, on the second floor, and I asked for a single room, first because all my life, even though I had a brother, I had a room of my own and I did not want to share the room with a stranger, Elle would come to visit me and I really wanted her to stay here instead of going to a hotel ... I wanted her to like Harvard, so she would think more fondly of coming to study here.
My mother had done the decorating of the room, two weekends before I moved, I did not want to leave LA, so she came with my dad and they cleaned everything up. As my mother was an architect and decorator, it got easier ... I opened the door and everything was flawless. "Oh, Mrs. June Flynn, you know me like no one!" this was my first thought when I saw my giant bed with a soft cushions. The cabinets were built-in, but my mother asked to paint the doors and left the inside intact, super clean. Already had a place with bedding and bath, two blankets and a black bathrobe. From both sides of the gigantic bed, bedside tables and lamps. The TV was smart and stood on the wall in front of my bed. Near the window was the desk, and on one side a small refrigerator with a microwave above, on the other a shelf for me to put books. I looked at the chair, I sat on it ... it was definitely the only thing I would change ... I felt a gigantic longing for the chair in my room. "Tomorrow I'm going after this."
I put the suitcases on the floor, sat on the bed ... I really liked the bed, I hope Elle liked it too, and then a silly smile came out of my mouth. I felt her perfume on my sweatshirt, still a little in my arms, and that's when I realized I had not called her or my parents to say I was safe for almost two hours.
I called home, I imagined they would all be there. My mother answered "Finally baby! How was your flight? Any delay? Because you're two hours late to call us. "
"Sorry mom, I was first trying to find a car where my luggage fit in, so I got to the campus and went to my dorm. Now I'm installed, but I have not even started to unpack yet. By the way, the room is amazing, thank you very much, I knew you were the only one who would understand me. "
"Oh dear, how nice you liked it ... actually your father chose your chair, so he also had an important participation." I laughed thinking that, of course, the chair had not been chosen by her, but I did not say anything, I let her continue "Everyone is saying hi to you", in that "everyone" my heart skipped a beat "Is Elle still there?" I asked in an excited voice, and then I heard her voice
"Hi Noah ... how was your flight? I know you do not like being trapped on a plane for so many hours..." My heart almost jumped in my throat "Shelly, hi ... yes, the flight was okay, I did not even notice the time passing, I fell asleep as soon as I took off and had an incredible dream ... you were here with me" She laughed and I could imagine her face, her lips and her eyes staring at me.
"I'll send the photo from my room, from our bed ... I can not wait to have you here."
"Oh Noah, I hope the time is kind to us ... by the way, thank you for the surprise you left in my room. Your jacket has your scent ... and I love you too." Hearing that she had liked the surprise and had found the note made me smile.
"I'm glad to hear that you liked it. How is the Taco's night so far?"
"I miss someone to help me complain about the pepper. "
I laughed a lot, we always complained, since we were little, we never liked anything spicy, and we always asked that did not put so much pepper in the fillings of our tacos, but that was not always complied ... by the way she was suffering today.
"I'm going to kill Lee for making spicy tacos. I have to go now, I need to start unpacking and try to find a place to eat, I just realized that I'm starving. Have a good end to dinner, send me a message when you get home, I really want to talk to you, even if it's just to say *good night *"
"Okay Noah, I'll let you know when I get home... good luck in the housekeeping. I love you ... Your father, Lee and Rachel are also saying good night to you. Talk to you later."
I hung up the phone and started looking at my bags ... this would take hours ... I left everything there and decided to find a place to eat.
It was getting cold outside, very cold (Boston weather was very different from sunny California) and I realized how much I would miss Elle to keep me warm inside and out.
