Haya in Islam: Cultivating Modesty in an Immoral World

"Allah's Messenger Prophet ﷺ‎  said: Haya is a branch of faith."
In a world where shameless people are considered as role models the concept of Islamic Haya might seems to some as out dated.
To counter this thinking we need to deeply understand what Haya is:

Understanding the meaning of Haya
Haya comes with self respect and taqwa (being Allah conscious). In one sentence it is staying away from things which displeases Allah.

A famous case recorded from the life of a women companion of Prophet ﷺ‎ , she on hearing the death of her son stepped out of her house only after wearing her hijab saying "I may have lost my son but not Haya"

Cultivating Haya equally in men and women
Haya isn't only confined to women but is equally applicable to men.

The Prophet ﷺ‎ was “more bashful than a veiled virgin girl” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), and, according to a narration in Al-Bukhari, he “was neither a Faahish (a person who speaks obscene language to make people laugh), nor a Mutafahhish (a person who habitually uses bad language)."

Haya of the heart
Haya includes a deep rooted sense of humility that stops one from doing or promoting shameless deeds.
Islam never imposed hypocrisy or show off in the name of modesty.

Prophet ﷺ‎  said: “Haya’ does not bring anything except good.” (Al-Bukhari)

Jazak Allahu khairan kaseera,
Until next time In Shaa Allah,
