يسِّروا ولا تعسِّروا⁣

“Make things easy and don’t make things difficult.” - Muslim ⁣

An authentic and famous hadith of the Prophet ﷺ who himself was not given the option between two things except he chose what was easier as long as it did not involve sin.⁣

It is important to note that ease does not mean being neglectful of religious obligations or lowering the standards of what is allowable. ⁣

The religion is easy, and understanding it is easy. It is the ignorant that convolute it and make it difficult to comprehend and difficult to follow. ⁣

The Prophet ﷺ was cautious of causing hardship, so much that there were things that he would have commanded but he did not want to overburden us. ⁣

And one people came to him asking for ease, they found it. ⁣

I want to give you one of my favorite examples, ⁣

Al-Bayhaqi reports in Al-Sunan Al-Kubra that a beduin man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ⁣

“I can’t memorize anything of the Quran, so tell me something which will be enough for me.”⁣

Ok, hold on a second, what would 100% of us say to a guy who comes and says they can’t memorize the Quran: ⁣

You’re lying. ⁣

Yes you can. ⁣

Stop being lazy. ⁣

You can memorize Al-Fatiha. ⁣

This man is an Arab man. And he can’t memorize Al-Fatiha? ⁣

But he didn’t come to us. He came to the Prophet ﷺ, who said to him, ⁣

Say, “Exalted is Allah, and Praise be to Allah, and there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, and there is no source of power or transformation other than Allah.” ⁣

The beduin reached out his hand as if to snatch the words the Prophet ﷺ said from the air, and clenched his fist to keep the words safe. ⁣

And then he said, “That is for my Lord, but what is for me?” ⁣

He ﷺ said, “Say, O Allah have mercy on me, forgive me, sustain me, keep me well, and guide me⁣

The man then snatched those words out of the air with his other hand. When he walked away with both fists clenched the Prophet ﷺ remarked, ⁣

“As for this one, he has filled his hands with goodness.” ⁣

He made it easy. ⁣

So in the words of a good friend...⁣

Take it easy ya ‘azeezy. ⁣
