“Dad, when will you be back?” I asked my Dad as he and Mum were by the front door preparing for their “Date Night”.

“I don’t know. We’re going somewhere out of town so it depends on the traffic really. Are you sure you’ll be alright?” He asked, with a slight tinge of sadness layered in his deep, masculine voice. The two didn’t fit together easily which worried me marginally.

“Yeah, Ash and Luca are coming later this evening to keep me some company.” I reassured him, which made his pessimistic facet lessen to some extent.

“OK, it’s good to be with your friends; they make you happy.” OK, now I was extremely apprehensive of his behaviour.

“Dad, are you OK? You seem a little bit, uncertain I guess?”

“I’m fine my dear,” He kissed the side of my temple, “I love you, April. Please remember that. And I’m so sorry.” With his voice breaking, he shut his eyes tightly and turned out of the door and paced to the car, leaving me standing bewildered in the hallway.

My mum rounding the corner on the landing and began pounding down the stairs in her unconventional sleek black wedges, a smart dark red pencil skirt, white blouse and black blazer. She tripped on the last step but regained her balance almost as quick.

“Still not used to high heels, huh mum? I guess that’s why I never wear them. They’re always so inconvenient, especially when- oof” I was tackled within arms and pinned to the nearest wall. My mum was wracking with sobs and shaking violently.

“Mum, what’s happened? Why are you and Dad acting like this?” I begged, confusedly. My Mum looked up and I saw how red her eyes were, from crying?

“You’ll be OK on your own won’t you, my darling?” My mum sobbed, succumbing to her tears.

“Of course I will, I told Dad already. Why-“

“We have to go. I love you. Your Dad does too. Goodbye.” She kissed my forehead and enveloped me in a tight, uncomfortable hug to which she abandoned and ran out of the door.

“What the hell?” I questioned, to no one in particular.

“So they never normally act like this?” Ash questioned. We were all sitting on the floor of my living room, Ash and Luca were currently fighting for the beanbag; Ash had Luca in a headlock whereas Luca was licking her arm profusely.

Ash was a couple months older than I, but smaller. She had dark red hair and a splash of freckles dotted on her nose and cheeks like constellations. Her crystal blue eyes shone when she was happy and turned darker when she wasn’t.

Luca was a weird kid. He had dark curly hair, tanned skin and a big goofy grin on his face 99.99% of the time, it didn’t depend on his mood either, he must’ve super-glued his face in that position when he was younger. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.
