And, with Grayson around, April was more than willing to find an alternative person, other than herself, to rest her trust in.

--Chapter 29--

Muttering a plethora of incoherent rambles, April slipped into the cold, crisp air of late December, inhaling the brisk and fresh wind before walking, barefoot, onto the crunchy fallen leaves which cracked beneath her feet. The forest seemed like the most reasonable place to think, and that’s exactly what she wanted to do. Her hair ruffled around her shoulders and was brushed into her face as the vicious air whipped around her, causing all kinds of scents to reach her nose. Not many which April could say she recognised, but not that it had any effect on her. She made a silent promise to herself to never worry about the inevitable, seeing as it’ll only bring her down- more so than already.

These woods were different to the ones at Grayson’s campsite of hunters. For one, although she hadn’t explored the majority of it, she just knew that they were larger, more spacious, probably containing more of the unknown. April wondered what it would be like to shift into her wolf, like she would’ve if it weren’t for Grayson holding her back with his completely idiotic move. She was aware of the consequences which would come with it, but she wanted it anyway. To feel the freedom. Something which she hadn’t felt in a long time.

In fact, April was pretty sure she’d never truly felt freedom, seeing as it was a pretty unlikely aspect for a teenager to have. That, along with their independence. There was a time when April thought she had those things, just because she owned a badass car. But now, she had an idea of what freedom and independence were actually like. She just didn’t have either one of them.

The sound of rushing water intrigued April, reminding her of the time she and Grayson climbed the waterfall- possibly the best night of her life. Her feet quickened their pace as anticipation built in her stomach, and she didn’t seem to mind as blunt rocks buried themselves into the soles of her feet with every movement she made; too distracted to care. Branches of the trees slowly opened out into a massive dome-shaped clearing, with a wide creek stretched across it. Above it was a waterfall, pretty much disguised by the humungous rocks and boulders which surrounded it. With her heartbeat pounding heavily against her chest, April stepped closer to the water which she noticed was partly frozen due to the icy air. Small pebbles littered the bank, ranging in size and tones of grey and brown, creating an array of colours clashing with the orange-leaved or bare trees and murky blue water. Her fingers skimmed along the surface of the iced liquid, dancing as the coldness tickled her fingertips. The overly-long sleeve of her shirt dipped into the water, drenching the fabric and letting the substance trickle teasingly down her arm.

April sighed, breathing in the fresh air, revelling in the contentment she gained from it. Grayson and Maxwell were probably finding fun elsewhere without her, not wanting to spend time with the girl who could’ve killed them in seconds. But that didn’t bother her either. She was fine by herself, not needing anyone to keep her company.
