Davey Jacobs kept his head down, walking through the hallways of his new school. He tried to ignore the whispering, he really did, but that's hard to do when everyone around you is whispering. Especially when they're whispering about you.

Davey knew that everyone always talks when there's a new kid, especially when they transfer in the middle of November. He prepared himself for the whispers and told himself that at least they were whispering about him because he was new, not because he did something bad. Besides, he knew the whispers would be gone tomorrow as long as he was a relatively normal person today. His goal was to make at least one friend in the first half of the day, because if he had to sit alone at lunch then the rest of the day he'd just be awkward.

Jack Kelly, on the other hand, kept his head up and on a swivel as he walked through the hallway. He was joking around with Race and Crutchie, his two second in commands. Yes, he did have two second in commands. Race had leadership skills, Jack wasn't going to deny that, and he had been with the group a long time, but he spent a lot of time in Brooklyn. Crutchie had been with the group for awhile too, and he was Jack's best friend, but he didn't really want much of a leadership position. But Jack wasn't planning on leaving anytime soon, so no decision was going to be made.

Race elbowed Jack in the side, tilting his head in Davey's direction. "Jack, new kid." He alerted, and Jack nodded.

"Ay! New kid!" Jack yelled out to Davey, who was looking down at his map. Davey pointed to himself, a look of confusion on his face. "Yeah, you! You need help finding your class?" He motioned for Race and Crutchie to keep walking without him, but neither listened and all three boys walked up to Davey.

"Yeah, a little." Davey admitted sheepishly.

"We'll help! I'm Crutchie!" Crutchie piped up, sticking out his hand to shake Davey's. "This here's Race, 'n that's Jack." He pointed to each boy.

"Nice to meet you all." Davey nodded, smiling a little.

"Now, whatcha got first?" Race asked, stealing the paper from Davey.

"Um, English, I think." Davey said, fiddling with his hands a little.

"Meyers?" Jack asked.

"Yeah." Race nodded, answering for Davey.

"Me too. I'll take ya there." Jack offered as Race handed the paper back to Davey. "What's ya name?" He asked, just realizing he never asked.

"Davey. Davey Jacobs." He said, shoving the paper in his bag.

"Well, Dave,  we best be heading off to class." Jack wrapped an arm around Davey's shoulders.

"You, you really don't have to do that." Davey said, biting his lip.

"Yeah, well, I wanna. Racer, you heard from Elmer this morning?" Jack asked as he started to walk down the hall again.

"Yeah, he's still out sick." Race nodded, chewing a piece of gum. Davey smiled as he listened to the three boys talk. Maybe he was going to have someone to sit with at lunch.

(Hey! Sorry this is so short! Most chapters are gonna be longer than this, I promise!)
