When Sarah Jacobs got home from college, the first thing she did was look for Davey. She searched all over the house until she finally heard his voice coming from his room. His door was shut, but Sarah could very clearly hear him from inside. She pressed her ear against the door, listening intently. Sarah heard Davey laughing, which brought a smile to her face. Then, she heard the rest of his side of the conversation.
"Jackie! Don't listen to Race. That is an awful idea. No, do not put another Ring Ding in your mouth. No, that will not fit. Jackie, Jackie. Jack you idiot I swear. No!" She heard him laugh again. "Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow. Bye." Sarah heard him blow a kiss. She was about to open the door when she heard him whisper one more thing. "I love you." It sounded like he was whispering to himself. Sarah opened the door and leaned against the wall.
"So, who's Jackie?" She asked, watching her brother jump about fifty feet in the air.
"S-Sarah! When did you get home?" He asked.
"Forty five minutes ago. Who's Jackie?" She repeated her question. "A girl?"
"No, no." Davey shook his head. His face looked like a firetruck. "It was Jack. My best friend. The one I told you about?"
"Oh, yeah?" Sarah asked, and Davey nodded. "Then why did you blow a kiss and whisper I love you?"
"I-um." Davey shook his head. "Shut the door, please. I don't need Les hearing this."
"I'm already here." Les yelled from somewhere inside the room. Sarah walked over to the closet and opened it, and Les stepped out.
"How did you get in here?" Davey asked frantically.
"I was looking for a ball, then you came in and got on FaceTime with Jack so I hid in the closet." Les shrugged.
"He might as well hear, Dave, if this takes the turn I think it will." Sarah offered.
"Fine, but still close the door. Mom and Dad...I don't want them to hear either." Davey confessed. Sarah nodded and shut the door. She sat down at Davey's desk and motioned for Les to sit on the floor. Davey took a shaky breath, unsure of what to do. He didn't know what to say. Did he just come flat out and say it? Did he try insinuating a few things first? Which part did he say first, that he and Jack were dating, or his sexuality? He hadn't really planned on doing it today. He was going to ask the boys for help and come out in a more fun way than sitting down and explaining to everyone. But this was going happen eventually. Might as well do it. Seize the day, that's what he had always told the boys. Davey took another shaky breath, and started talking. "I'm gay. Jack and I are dating. We have been for a few weeks." He confessed. "We got together at the lake house over the three day weekend. I'm sorry." There was a moment so silence before Sarah spoke up.
"David, what on earth are you sorry for? Having a boyfriend? Because that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard." She shook her head. "I don't care who you date. Just as long as you tell me everything about them. Speaking of," Sarah slapped Davey's arm. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Tell you? You were away at college!" Davey explained.
"Text me!" Sarah insisted.
"It was too important to text! Besides, mom and dad read my phone sometimes." Davey confessed.
"Then tell them to stop. You're a junior in high school, David. You have to learn to say no to people." Sarah scolded. Les, however, was still quiet. Davey turned to him, a worried expression on his face.
"Les? You alright?" Davey asked. Les stayed quiet for another moment, then looked up at Davey.
"I knew it!" Les exclaimed. "I knew there was something up with you! You've been happier lately, since we transferred. And you were even happier when you came home from the lake house!"
"So, you're not upset with me?" Davey looked at each of his siblings.
"Hell no!" Les grinned.
"Lester Jacobs." Sarah glared at him.
"Ah, it's not a bad word." Les rolled his eyes.
"You are barely ten." Sarah scolded. "You shouldn't be saying that. Even if it's not a bad word."
"Fine." Les grumbled.
"So, how about pizza?" Sarah offered, rubbing her hands a little.
"Yeah!" Les jumped up.
"Go get on your coat." Sarah ordered her youngest brother. Davey didn't feel like he could stand. It felt so good to tell Les and Sarah, to not have to hide anymore. "David, are you coming?" Sarah turned around, asking him.
"What?" Davey asked, his head snapping up from the floor. "Yeah, yeah. I'm coming." Davey stood, grabbing his coat from his closet.
The three Jacobs siblings, reunited again, spent their afternoon at a pizza place a few blocks from their house. Davey ordered a slice of plain pizza, Les had gotten sausage, and Sarah had gotten a salad.
"C'mon, Sar, try it!" Les insisted, pushing his half eaten pizza towards Sarah.
"You know I'm vegetarian, Les." Sarah reminded, pushing the plate away.
"But this pizza is so good!" Les tried again.
"Then eat it yourself." Sarah deflected him. "David, you're being quiet." She pointed out. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." Davey shook his head. "Something just feels...off." He shrugged. "It's probably nothing." Sarah nodded and went back to her salad.
"So, David, when are you telling mom and dad?" Les asked.
"About what?"
"About Jack." The youngest Jacobs said like it was obvious.
"That's up to him." Sarah answered. Davey smiled gratefully at his sister, then felt his phone start to buzz in his pocket. He took it out to see Romeo's contact on the screen.
"I'll be right back." Davey grabbed his phone and made Sarah get out of the booth so he could take his friend's call. He walked outside, picking up the phone. "Hey, Romeo, what's up?" He asked.
"Come over. Now." Romeo said, obviously in distress. "It's Elmer. Something's wrong."
