"You look terrible," Jess said when I came through the door.
"I feel fine!" I snapped back.
"Not that your hair is all messed up and lipstick is..." She paused.
"Stop looking at me," I demanded.
"Where were you this morning?" She asked.
"I had a headache and went for a walk," I lied. Although I only half lied.
"Where for three hours," she pointed out.
"Oh so sorry mother I didn't know I couldn't go out of the house," I said sharply. Jess backed down.
"Jesus I was only asking," she said.
"Oh no you were doing a lot more," I stormed to the bathroom. I put the toilet seat down and sat there in front of the mirror and fixed my makeup. My lips still tingled and my head felt like it was full of concrete. Jess was right my hair was full of knots and it took a while to get them out. I didn't look perfect but why did it matter Beck wouldn't mind. "I wonder what he is planning of tonight," I wondered. Jess knocked on the door.
"Hey can I come in?" She asked. I unlocked the door and she walked in.
"Hey," I said.
"hey...I was wondering if you and me could have a girls night out tonight, like go to the movies or shopping whatever you want to do?" She asked.
"Oh does it have to be tonight because I kind of already have plans," I explained. Jess hesitated.
"Well ok maybe next weekend?" She asked. I shrugged.
"Just depends," I replied. Jess waved her hand.
"Fine, fine so where are you going tonight?" She asked.
"Um, just going somewhere with an old friend," I lied. She studied.
"An old friend, well I hope you have fun," she said flatly. I forced a smile on my face but it faltered. I begged for the night to come soon but the day just dragged on making me more agitated after every hour.
The time read 7:30pm. I sighed in relief. I had done nothing all day but think about tonight. I grabbed my bag, checked my hair and makeup and clothes. I wore black, flat shoes, blue jeans and a green tang top. "Have fun," Jess said looking up form her book. I waved and closed the door. The cold air made me shudder but I wasn't going to go back in. I hopped into the car and started it up. I may have only been 17 but I knew how to drive a car and no one had caught me yet. Beck had left the front light on for me and the door was unlocked. When I got inside I couldn't find him anywhere. I looked in all the rooms until I went into one that looked like his. It was a small room with an unmade bed in the corner, a window hovering over the bed with the view of the woods, a book shelf next to the bed, an old desk in the other corner, clothes covered the ground and on every wall was pitchers of wolves. I sat on Beck's bed. It was a water bed and smelt of him. I got up and looked at all his books. They were either about wolves or stories about werewolves. I sighed.
"I know I'm a freak," Beck said. I turned around and saw him standing in the doorway. My cheeks turned red and hot of embarrassment,
"I'm sorry for snooping around, I couldn't find you and..."
"Hey it's ok, I was just out the back sorry," he interrupted. I told a deep breath.
"So what did you want to show me?" I asked. Now Beck looked amused.
"I'm going to show you why we are so different because I think you're ready," Beck explained. I raised an eyebrow but he gestured for me to follow him and I did. Beck lead me out back again. Clouds covered the moon and stars making the sky look dull and plain. My stomach twisted and my head started to throb.
"What are we doing out here?" I asked. Beck smiled.
"Like I said I'm showing you why we are so different from everyone," he explained again. I felt like someone was grabbing my stomach and twisting it from the inside. My phone rung and I picked it up.
"Hey Taia I was just making sure your ok," Jess said. I didn't know it I was ok. I looked at Beck and he nodded his head.
"I'm fine don't worry," I replied and pressed end. Beck wrapped his arms around me and walked me towards the woods.
"You ok?" He asked.
"I feel like I'm going to through up," I replied.
"Well try not to," Beck said. I looked at him he obviously felt the same but somehow it didn't bother him.
"Can I sit down for a moment?" I asked.
"Why asked?" He replied and we sat down. So many feeling were going through me at that moment but the one that was the strongest was fear. I wrapped my arms around my stomach and groaned.
"What is happening?" I asked faintly.
"You are shifting but don't worry you will be fine I will protect you my little pup," he smiled softly. The clouds broke away from the moon and it's light pored on us. Beck laughed crazily. At that moment something took over my body and my vision blurred.
"Beck," I said.
"It's ok let the power flow," he reassured me by holding my hand. I did as he told me and then everything went blank.
I woke up laid out on the ground. Something seemed wrong. My sense of smell was a lot stronger and I could see everything in the dark. I looked down at my body only to find that I was a wolf with black fur. I slowly got up and felt how much strength I had lost. Surprisingly I wasn't upset that I was a wolf. Actually I was exited and happy. I looked around and found a grey wolf behind me. He was a lot taler than me and I tucked my tail between my legs. He barked at me.
"Don't be scared of me remember I said I would protect you my little pup," said his voice in my head.
"Beck?" I asked back. He barked at me again.
"I will follow you so lead the way," he replied. I looked at the woods but shook my head. I ran through house and onto the path.
"We should be out here," Beck pointed out.
"You said you will follow me so that you will," I said again. Beck growled but didn't argue with me any further. I ran as fast as I could avoiding any lights if I could. I reached Jess' house. It seemed different in a wolf's eyes but I still recognised it. Beck was on lookout just in case someone was having a late night walk. I sniffed the ground and ran to their backyard. Beck still followed but not as close. I ran around the backyard.
"We shouldn't be this close to any house," Beck said.
"Take a chill pill Beck we will be fine," I replied I but not sure if I was right. I stared at a bedroom window.
"Someone's coming!" Beck warned me. We ran all around the house but there was no where to hide. I could hear the foot steps coming closer. I hid in the shadows with my black fur but Beck was still noticeable. Suddenly I heard dogs barking and it was to late.
