Zeref is said to have been the darkest, most evil Mage in the history of the Magic World, mastering the Black Arts and creating many Demons, some of which still wreak havoc in the present.

Personal Opinion on Zeref:
Zeref looked too cute to be evil! Well, that was what I thought when I first saw Zeref who was resting at Tenroujima, also the place where he first met Mavis. Of course, it was unbelievable that he is Natsu's brother when I first found out from reading the manga.
