Bright.

That's how it started or how far I could actually remember. It was so bright I couldn't tell if it was yellow or white. Being used to a blue sky, I didn't like this.

Someone cleared their throats. I looked around but couldn't make out who it was.

“Newcomers.” Someone scoffed. “Turn down his light!”

Suddenly the blinding light faded, saving me, ironically, from blindness. Three thrones with three of the darkest creatures I've ever seen, sat glowing. Three golden masks stared down at me.

“Step forth, newcomer and receive judgment!” The middle one, shouted.

I didn't have anywhere else to go, I mean I didn't even know where I was.

I stepped forward.

“Newcomer ,” The middle one shouted. “, your merits and demerits have been weighed.”

“Had one meaningful relationship,” It began. “, but played and abused many.”

“Saved his girlfriend from slitting her wrists,” The left one said this time. “, but made another.”

They were listing the good and bad deeds of my life, I assumed. Unfortunately, I remember nothing of my clearly short life.

“Does believe in the all knowing God,” This time, the one of the right spoke. Their voices were all symphonic in my ears. Almost angelic. “, but believes in all gods as well. He thinks that each one had to be true as the stories came from somewhere.”

That sounded right. It didn't make sense to believe in just one god. I wouldn't want someone to blame.

“Wrote books from misfortune,” The middle one resumed.“,but used his power of words to hurt many.”

This went on for a long time. It made sense, though. I had probably committed many good deeds and probably an equal amount of bad. I was a neutral. They would probably wipe my memory and send me to an empty space, not quite here nor there.

Until the left most one changed his tone a fraction. “Do you know who we are?”

I looked straight at him. “You three are judges.”

“Indeed we are, ” The right one took over.“, but we are Angels, tasked by God to judge those who decide to enter Heaven!”

“Are you saying I decided to go to Heaven?” I asked. “I thought it was decided by you, or you know...God.”

“There have been cases where the crooked have come to Heaven but we have kept the peace.” The middle one explained. “But we also have a very special power as Angels.”

“And finally,” The left Angel resumed the list.“, always wanted to be a hero but never became one. Step forward, Newcomer. ”

“You have been chosen to become an Angel of God.” The middle Angel announced. My eyes widened. “You will train under your namesake and, if you graduate, will become a fullfledged Angel to serve the Lord.”

The Left Angel tilted his head. “Kneel Newcomer. You are now a student of our Angel Society. If you graduate, you will be given the opportunity to choose a new name but for now, you will remain Zayke.”
