HIJAB: WHY SO CONTROVERSIAL?

Apparently when I said this rant book was over, I was lying.

I've come upon this debate several times in the past year.

Hijab vs. no hijab. Is the hijab oppressing women? Is it restraining women from freedom?

Who knew a piece of clothing could cause so much debate? First off, I just want to say that the hijab isn't just the head covering. Rather, it is a series of rules that govern how both men and women should dress. Yes, that means there technically is a 'hijab' for men too and no... we are not going to get into that right now.

Secondly, you don't get to decide what counts as oppression and what doesn't. I understand that some countries use the hijab to oppress women and I am completely against that. The truth is that culture and religion are separate. Islam advocates for women's rights and what those countries do is not right. What I will never understand is why everyone decides that the people who can't even pronounce Muslim right are the ones who should be believed. It seems to me like those who wear the hijab are never asked what they think of it or even why they wear it in the first place.

Just something to think about, I guess.
