Edward's P.O.V
Just as I feared, it was too good to be true. Too many good things had been going on in my life: I became a father to the most beautiful little girl in the world, the woman I had loved for years loved me back, I had an amazing family, I was going to become an uncle. I forgot all about the negative. I thought we were invincible. I thought he was eternal.
But we can't have all the good, without any of the bad, can we?
The call came at 3:20 am, in the depths of the night. My mother was frantic. Someone had tried to break into their home, setting off their security system. My father, trying to keep her safe, grabbed the bat he kept beside his bed and walked toward the door. A man burst into their room, attacking my father, leaving with all my mother's jewelery and more than fifteen hundred dollars in his pockets. My dad was unresponsive when the paramedics arrived.
I can't explain the feeling. It was a mixture of pure terror and rage. I couldn't wait till Bella got Ella and herself ready to go to the hospital, which is why we came here in two separate cars. When I first arrived at the hospital, I noticed my mother's nightgown covered in dad's blood. She was still in a state of shock after what happened, so I called Bella and asked her to bring her some clothes she can change to. Alice arrived shortly after I did, her eyes bloodshot red and her face puffy and teary.
We waited for what felt for hours until a doctor finally came out. It was one of my father's colleagues, he said my father was in critical condition, that his injuries were worse than he thought. The worse one was the impact he got on the head, they needed to see if there were any signs of brain activity.
That was two hours ago.
Now, here we sit, in the waiting room. Bella is pacing around the room with Ella in arms, trying to keep her entertained until her parents are able to stop by and take her for the rest of the day. Alice is sleeping on Jasper's lap, and Mom is sitting beside me, holding on to my hand for dear life. Ella begins fussing as Bella bounces her, trying to fight her way out of her blankets and letting out a loud cry.
That snaps Mom out of her daze, focusing her attention on Ella. She stands up, leaving me behind and approaches Bella.
"Here, darling, let me have her. You and Edward should go down for breakfast."
Bella shook her head. "It's okay, Esme. She woke up earlier than she does, all she needs is a nap."
"I'll take her," Mom insists. "Please... Take Edward and get him and yourself something to eat." The last part she said it lower, like a whisper.
Bella accepts and hands Ella to my mother, who cradles her against her chest and walks back to her spot beside me. She nods her head toward Bella, giving me the hint to go with her to get something to eat. I caress Ella's warm cheek as she keeps fussing up and stand up. Bella takes my hand in hers after asking Jasper if he wants her to bring back food, and we walk out of the waiting room. I stop us as soon as we're out of sight.
"I'm not hungry."
"You have to eat," Bella says. "We've been here for eights hours."
"Bella, I'm not hungry." I emphasis on the not because honestly I don't have the appetite to eat anything.
Bella glares at me. "You won't be any use to him weak, Edward. At least have a cup of coffee."
"Will that make you happy?"
"That will make your mother feel better," she states, tugging my hand. "Come on, let's go."
Bella makes both our coffees and orders the food Jasper had asked for Alice. We sit down at the cafeteria, waiting for our order. Bella doesn't say much. We sit side by side, silently looking at the cups in our hands.
