Chapter 6- Cards Against Remnant

Ehwaz's POV

Ruby and I walked down the halls of Beacon in awkward silence, Ruby still nervously gnawing on her cookie.

"So, are you leader?" I asked, hoping to break the awkwardness.
"Huh?" replied Ruby, breaking out of her daze.
"Are you the leader? Of team RWBY? Your name is at the beginning so I just wanted to ask."
"Yeah, I am."

More awkward silence.

"Hey," said Ruby, breaking the silence this time, "Uh, why do you have both fox ears and a tail?"

I took a deep breath, and closed my eyes before sighing.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't of asked," apologized Ruby.
"No. It's a perfectly innocent question," I said, " You see, many Faunus only have a tail or ears. To have both, is a telltale sign of incest, much like you humans having an extra toe or finger. And much like you humans, incest is also frowned upon by the Faunus."

I looked at Ruby, expecting to see her eyes glazed over with boredom, or full of judgement. Instead, her eyes were rapt with attention, and full of empathy.

I continued, "It was my mother. She was a close, but long lost cousin to my family. My father and her fell in love, not knowing they were of the same blood. When I was born, my mother didn't survive and it was clear I was an inbreed. My father blamed me for my mother's death and barely if at all acknowledged my existence. When I was five, I hid on a supply ship and left Menagerie. When we docked I was discovered and drove out the village we docked in. I stayed in an abandoned village were I was later found and taken in by Artaq, my teacher, and brought to Ikaal where I spent my life."

Ruby looked at me with much compassion before saying, "I never knew my mother either. She was a huntress. One day she went on a mission and never came back. It hit my dad hard, but he never went distant. I guess some people handle loss differently."

"You share a lot in common with her, you two are very alike."

Once again Ozpin's words rang in my ears.

"Well, here we are," said Ruby. We stopped in front of a dorm door, just like any other.

I looked at Ruby with as much sincerity as possible and said, "Thank you for bringing me to my dorm Ms. Rose."
"Just call me Ruby," she responded.
"Thank you Ruby, and I am sorry about your mom."
"It's fine, I was to young to remember her anyway."

I smiled at her strength and bravery. "Well, see you later," I said turning to open my dorm door.
"Wait," Ruby suddenly said.
"Yes?"
"Um, after you get settled in, you want to come to the library? My team will be there playing a game called 'Conquerers of Remnant'".

I smiled, "Yeah, I'll be there."

"Cool," said Ruby, who was slightly blushing, "See ya."
Ruby turned and walked a little way down the hall before darting into what might have been her dorm or a broom closet.
I shook my head and walked into my dorm.

Later at the library...

I walked into the library looked around. Several students were reading quietly at their tables, so I immediately picked team RWBY out from the crowd. They were now in what I assume was their normal clothing.

As I made my way over to their table, Ruby immediately noticed me and shouted, "Hey Ehwaz, over here!"

I flinched at the shout since, well, this was a library.

I came over and pulled up a chair between Ruby and Blake, the later who suddenly seemed to come out of her thought process by my presence and looked at me with uncertainty.

"So, what's this game about?" I asked.

"It's about you being the leader of your kingdom, and trying to conquer the other kingdoms," explained Ruby.
"And I'm winning," bragged Yang.

"So," said Ruby, ignoring Yang, "You get all settled in?"
I couldn't help but notice she was much more relaxed than earlier, shame. She looked cute when she was awkward. Well, she is still cute. You know what I mean.

"Yeah," I replied, "Just had to take care of a rather pesky bug that was bothering me."

Third person POV

On a tree branch just outside the window of team LOKE's dorm, Oris hung upside down from her robes, which she was desperately trying to keep from going past her waist.
"Ehwaz! I'm sorry. I won't tease you again about the girl you obviously like or tease you about looking at Lena's butt ever again!! Don't leave me here!!" she cried. A crow landed on a branch just above her and looked down her robes. Oris noticed him and shouted, "Take a picture, it will last longer you pervert!"
The crow then promptly pulled out its scroll and snapped a picture before winking at Oris, and flying off.

Ehwaz's POV

I have absolutely no regrets.

"Hey, can I play?" asked the leader of team JNPR, Jaune.
"Sorry Jaune," Ruby replied, "We've already got four people."
"Besides, this game requires a certain level and tactical cunning, that I seriously doubt you posses," stated Weiss.
"Uh... you attacked your own naval fleet two turns ago," Yang said matter-of-factly.

I could sense tension forming at the table, so I decided to interject.
"What about a game all of us could play?"

Everyone stopped and looked at me.

"Is this a bad time?" asked a voice behind me.
I turned and saw a guy with blonde hair and an open shirt exposing the most well toned abs I ever saw. Behind him was a guy with blue hair, much like Lena's, and goggles, and bright, gleaming white teeth.

I flicked my tail, disgusted at their ridiculously perfect features.

"Hey Sun," said Ruby.
"Ruby, Yang, Blake, ... Ice Queen," said Sun.
"Why does everyone keep calling my that?!" exclaimed Weiss.
Sun continued, "I never got a chance to formally introduce you to my old friend."
"Uh, aren't libraries for reading?" asked Goggles.

"Thank you!" cried Ren from JNPR's table, waking up Nora who then snorted, "Pancakes!!"

"Shut up," said Sun to Goggles, "Don't be a nerd." Sun then noticed me and asked, "Hey, you were at the docks the other night!"

Ah crap.

"Dude, you and your friends were awesome!! Where did you guys learn to fight like that?" Sun then exclaimed.
"Uh, school." I replied.
Sun turned back to everyone, "Anyway, this is Neptune."

"So.... Neptune. Where you from?" asked Weiss in the same tone Ruby used with me earlier today. She must like him already.
"Haven," replied Neptune, "And I don't believe I caught your name, snow angel."
"Um," Weiss blushed, "I'm Weiss."

Nearby Jaune said, "Are you kidding me?"

"It's a pleasure to meet you," said Neptune, slightly bowing.

"I never took you to be the board game playing type," Sun commented to Blake.
"Right," replied Blake, "Well, I think I'm done playing, actually. I'll see you later." She then stood up and left.

Ruby then looked at me, "So, Ehwaz. What was that game again?"
I smiled and said, "Right the game is actually rather simple. My friends and I call it Epic, but it's real name is called 'Cards Against Remnant'."
