Staring blankly at the dead woman, I held my breath, hoping I was wrong. She didn't move.

It was my fault.

I should've been paying more attention to Mrs. Cunningham rather than watching my guys kill a zombie.

I could've worked harder to slow down her bleeding. Yeah, I'd been pressing down really hard, but I should've done more for her.

"Is she dead?" Dad's voice came from a black hole somewhere in the distance.

Tears blurred my vision. Dad had given me one job, and I'd failed.

Releasing the hold on her neck wound, blood barely flowed now, trickling down to a huge dark red stain invading her blouse.

"What're you doing?" Derek's voice coming from the same black hole as Dad's. Tears tumbled down my cheeks. She was dead because I couldn't keep my crap together long enough to keep her alive.

Suddenly, Mrs. Cunningham's eyes burst open.

I gasped in relief. Mrs. Cunningham was alive. I'd been wrong about the major blood vessel. She would be just fine.

"Are you okay?" My voice barely edged its way out over my relief.

When her eyes found me. I knew I was dead wrong.

Mrs. Cunningham was not okay. I gaped at her irises that were pooling with blood.

I jolted back as she lunged for me, falling backward onto the carpet. Her blood-stained fingers grasped the front of my hoodie.

"Casey!" Several people yelled.

I shouted as she landed on top of me. She was frigging fast.

Struggling to get away was nearly impossible under her strength. How in the hell could a woman as petite as her be so damn strong? I kneed her in the stomach three times, but she didn't budge.

That was when her teeth made contact with the exposed skin on my arm. Pain lashed down through me as her teeth sunk deep, ripping into my forearm.

I kicked at her wildly and did all I could to push her back. In retaliation, her head whipped from side to side, digging in until her teeth scraped across my bone.

It all happened so fast.

Derek and Thomas were by my side within seconds, but it was too late. Mrs. Cunningham's teeth were already inside me.

Derek did his best to pull the woman off me, but he couldn't get her raptor jaw to release me.

"Move!" Someone hollered.

Derek glanced behind me and let go of Mrs. Cunningham, sending piercing stabs up my arm.

Thomas took Derek's spot and smashed the side of the woman's face with the cast-iron skillet, causing her to teeth to yank my skin sideways. My arm ignited in flames with the hard rip of my skin, which jerked a scream out of me.
