Over the next couple of weeks, things didn't quite go as planned.
Two huge groups of biters came through, forcing us all to stay inside for days at a time, which screwed up life for a while. Luckily, all the windows were boarded up, tight and secure, and we reinforced the doors. We'd even managed to strengthen the skirting of the trailer a little before they came through.
It was a relief to know we'd completed some critical tasks before the biters came through, but we still hadn't built the fence which was something I badly wanted to do. It just wasn't an attainable goal yet.
Even though we relied heavily on battery-powered lanterns, I liked living in a somewhat safe structure. Mitch had thought of batteries and solar chargers, but one day the chargers would break, and we needed to be ready.
On the bright side, Thomas was healing really well, and he promised to take me looting soon. It wasn't easy being inside so much, especially with Mindy's needs, but we made due.
Since arriving at the trailer, Thomas had naturally taken over the leadership role.
It was impressive how Thomas commanded respect by merely making sure things were getting done, but the role suited him, and everyone listened to him. Even Derek and Matt.
With Derek and Andrea attached at the hip, it quickly became apparent that Derek's promises held no time frame. I wanted to believe that Derek hadn't lied, but I refused to live in that dream world any longer. We were friends, and that was it. Andrea was a lot to handle, and she was clingy as hell.
After he kissed me in the cellar, Derek had become just as distant as before. We didn't speak unless we were discussing an important issue. A couple of days after the kiss, I finally acknowledged the fact that Derek was off the table and realized it was silly to think he'd ever been an option to begin with.
Our sleeping arrangements hadn't changed, and I was getting used to sleeping with Thomas and Mindy. It was comforting to have Suzie and Grant so close. There was still an extra room, but for the time being, we were using it as a storage space. I could only assume Grant and Suzie would claim it someday.
Suzie's night terrors were still messing with her head, but they were improving, which was a relief.
It'd rained a couple of times, and we were able to capture water in buckets and empty containers. Rainwater was surprisingly pure.
One day, after we cleared some lingering biters, it started raining so hard I ran outside to use the downpour as a shower. I stayed in my bra and underwear, and I didn't go too crazy, but you'd be amazed at what I did with a little soap, shampoo, and a razor in heavy rain. I was in heaven for those twenty minutes.
Not everyone jumped at the idea of showering in the rain, but my family didn't have any problem joining me in the free shower. It beat feeling like a scuzz-bucket for another day. I knew I would've gotten cleaner in a bath or a real shower, but that wasn't an option.
