Chapter 23: Driving School For Demigods
When I reached the car and got Zyra strapped in, I began to panic.
I had only driven a car once or twice before. And it was in the parking lot of Publix. Late at night. With nobody around. I didn’t even have a license. Or any ID for that matter. Demigods didn’t really use them, they gave away too much.
“Ok, Tara, you can do this. You’re sixteen years old. You just battled a freaken Titan. You even have almost defeated a goddess. You can drive.” I tried to calm myself and steady my breathing. I hoped the gods were looking down on me. I even made a silent prayer to Zeus. And Poseidon. And Hermes. And Hera. And Hephaestus. And- let’s just say I made a whole lot of prayers to a whole lot of gods at that moment.
But I still felt petrified with fear.
Just then, when I didn’t think it could get any worse -which of course it meant it could- my old friend who I had just defeated showed up, and tried smashing the car with my almost-dead adoptive mother and I inside of it.
I screamed as the first fiery fist came down and ripped off my rearview mirror. I immediately put in the keys and started the ignition. Another fist came down and I barely had time to summon water to stop it. Not knowing what to do, I backed up without looking. I think I may have hit a deer, but it was a large one at that.
Hyperion bellowed and I figured it was him who I had just crashed into. I put the gear in motion and began to speed away and down the dirt road. I couldn’t decide if it was my hands shaking, or the whole road. But there was a bump behind me. I looked through Zyra’s mirror, because mine was gone completely, and screamed.
My least favorite relative was following us, and gaining. I wasn’t sure how fast an old BMW went, and especially on a dirt path, but I still pushed my foot as hard as I could on the gas, and tried steering at the same time. It was so nerve wrecking, even without the Titan chasing us. I almost whacked into a tree more than once. To tell the truth, I wasn’t even sure where to go when we reached the fork-road dead ahead of us.
Suddenly, a miracle happened.
My good old friend Blaze showed up with some friends. I cheered them on as they attacked the Titan gaining on us. Blaze had brought Blackjack, Porkpie, and another Pegasus I didn’t know the name of, and they were spitting in his eyes, pecking at his hair, and even throwing something that looked like… donuts? I wasn’t sure.
But as long as they helped me, I didn’t care. Soon enough, we were far from the angry Titan, and on our way home. I was breathing normally and didn’t really panic much more after that. I sensed the closest way home was the left path, so I turned on it. The rest of the ride consisted of me hysterically laughing at how I almost died so many times, and my mother mumbling something about pegasi. I guess you could say I was a troubled child.
But then again, it all depends on your perspective on the situation. I was a weird kid with a weird semi-talent, (if that’s what you call it) and a crazy messed-up lifestyle with crazy, insane friends. What can I say? I loved it.
