Chapter 29: A Visit That We Didn’t Expect

A day before Christmas, and we got some unexpected visitors.

I was casually making my way through the field, when I heard shouts ringing from the front of the camp. “Ambush! Ambush! Report to the borders with weapons at ready!” Someone shouted. I followed a few people towards where the shouts were coming from. When I reached the borderline where the mortal world meets camp, I saw hazy figures in the distance. As they got closer I realized it was a whole bunch of wild pigs. About twelve. And they looked nasty and aggressive. I wonder what had spooked them, and why they were coming this way.

A few campers charged, along with Jason, but they didn’t need to. A large volley of silver arrows came from nowhere and shot down each of the pigs. One was left just wondering around, and I was going to go for the kill, but another arrow landed right in front of me. I quickly stopped, and saw that it had glazed the side of my boot. The next arrow shot down the pig that I was going to kill. A flush of anger raced through me.

It was my kill, I had obviously claimed it. But some random person or thing, had just almost speared my foot, and totally ignored the fact that I was going after it. Whoever or whatever it was, is going to have a talk with me.

I bent down to pick up the arrow, and a voice called, “That belongs to me.” I saw the black boots, and looked up.

A girl that looked around sixteen was standing just a few inches away from me. It was her that had ruined my plan. She had short cropped black hair, and electrifying blue eyes. She resembled Jason. And I saw the thin line of freckles going across her nose. With her black clothes, and shimmery silver aura that gleamed around her, she looked like death and life. The deadly bow and arrow strapped to her back did not help one bit.

“Well, I hope you realize you almost speared my foot.” I spat at her. She needed to know that I was not one to push around.

“It was my kill, and you were going after it.” She retorted.

“It was mine! I was going after it! You saw me!”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

“No way!”

“Yea-huh!”

We could’ve gone on all day if Jason hadn’t come up and separated us. We were both in each other’s face, and not happy.

“Thalia! I’m so glad you’re here!” Jason gave me a; get-the-hell-away-from-here-right-now-if-you-want-to-live look, so I walked off, fists clenched.

I was mumbling about how random archers shouldn’t even be here, when a whole bunch of them came from the brush. They all looked to be about ages 12-16. I wailed in despair, “No! Don’t tell me there’s more of them!”
