Chapter 37: The Best Luck In The World
I almost screamed as I looked at the fallen warrior.
Leo's eyes were closed, and he looked dead. I hated to think it, so I tried to get my mind off of it. I knelt down and scooped him into my arms. His limp body made me think that he may have been dead. But I checked his pulse, and it was beating slowly.
"Hazel, is he okay?" I asked.
She looked down sadly at her hands. "He's barely breathing. Someone stabbed him during the game. He needs help." She answered.
I let out a sigh of relief. Tears came to the surface of my eyes, and I yelled to someone to bring a medic or doctor. A few rushed off to find help. I hated how every time something seems to go right, something bad happens.
"Leo, stay with me." I said, stroking his hair.
He gasped and barely opened his eyes. That was all I needed from him. "It hurts..." He winced, "But there's been worse." He tried to grin.
I smiled and wiped the dirt from his face. It was amazing how even though he was in pain, he still tried being optimistic. He looked down at his side, and I noticed it was covered in blood. I carefully laid down his head, and checked out the injury. It was located on his left side, right below the ribs. I tenderly lifted up his armor and shirt. Underneath was a nasty gash that was worse than anything I had witnessed before. It made me cringe.
But his face showed no sign of weakness.
As the people arrived to take Leo away, I helped him onto the stretcher. His face showed no emotion, but I knew he was holding in a scream. I saw the pain on his face. "You better get well, Valdez. Otherwise I'll personally kill you, not some stupid cut." I warned him, and before he was whisked away, I kissed his cheek.
"Consider me warned." He grinned.
The other campers went back to their business and started getting together all of the weapons. The elephant was gone, and campers headed back to the town, ready to go to sleep. The sun had gone down, and the moon began to shine bright.
Hazel came over and put an arm around my shoulders. "He'll be fine. I'm quite sure of that." She said, trying to comfort me.
I nodded and smiled. I knew he would. "Leo Valdez? Of course. I have no doubt that he'll be ready to go by tomorrow." I joked.
We laughed with each other as the games ended and everyone was leaving. She directed me back to the bakery shop.
"Why are we back here?" I asked as we sat at a table.
"Their hot chocolate is to diefor. Not literally. I thought you might want something to sweeten up your day a little." Hazel responded.
I smiled. This girl was the best. She was always optimistic and looked for nice things to pay attention to. Hazel Levesque was my not only my new ally, but also my only close friend. Don't get me wrong, Leo was a great friend too, and I obviously cared about him, but he was a guy. And it's not like you could just talk to him about girl problems.
"You're too nice, Hazel. How can I repay you?"
"No need. It's fun to do nice things for people." She got closer, "And it's not like I have a whole lot of girls to talk to 'round here." She whispered.
I laughed. Of course, I knew that feeling.
Our cups came full of sweet aromas. I took a sip, and it tasted like Heaven and Olympus were doing the cha-cha in my mouth.
"Holy Hades." I said, "That's good."
She smiled and nodded, "See! Told you. It is the best that I've ever tasted."
