Chapter 50: …
Nico
I pressed my hand to her heart, but I knew that she was gone anyways. I felt it. The one consistent person in my life, the love of my life, was gone, as simple and as quick as that. There was nothing else to do now but face reality.
This time, the tears fell, and I didn’t bother to stop them.
Tara’s calm face mocked me with every second that passed. She wasn’t going to open her eyes, she wasn’t asleep. She was really gone, and the more that I thought about it, the more it would haunt me. Just one last minute, and then I would say goodbye.
“I loved you.”
Her petite lips were drained of color, and her whole body was nothing but a shell with no life, and yet she was the prettiest thing I had ever seen in my life. I knew the time spent together was priceless, but now that I knew that those were my last seconds, it didn’t feel right. She would open her eyes and her body would have life again.
But that didn’t happen.
I bent my head and kissed her cold lips. A droplet of water fell on her cheek and rolled its way down her chin. Another dropped, and soon enough, it was pouring. Holding her body tight, I cradled her lifeless head in my arms.
Not wanting to believe it, I put my lips on her’s once again. Even though she was gone, I knew that there was still life…somewhere.
The rain continued to fall.
I stayed with my lips to her’s and didn’t dare open my eyes. I gave up, realizing that it was hopeless. Instead, I hugged her and kept still.
Without warning, the rain stopped like someone had put a cork in it. A bright light from nowhere shined down on us, and I took the chance of opening my eyes.
Tara was gone, replaced by a shining figment of pure light. I shaded my eyes, and squinted at the scene before me. The light floated off the ground about three feet up. Tara’s whole body was a figment of energy. She wasn’t full of life like a living person; instead, she was full of power. Godly power. Unhuman. It scared me more than anything.
“You’re just going to take her from me? Huh? Is that what you do to true love? Just replace her with your stupid energy? Leave her alone!”
My voice rang out with strength, hiding the mask of cowardice underneath. A rumbling echoed throughout the whole empty field. The sun brightly shone down on Tara. Her eyes flicked open, and they were not her blue color. They were orbs of bright, shining light. Her mouth opened to reveal more golden light.
I shaded my face from the glory of it all.
